It's hard to believe that 2011 has come and gone already.  Even though I've only been here for 2 months, I can honestly look back on what we've accomplished as a community this year and be very proud and optimistic going into 2012.  So without further ado, here's your year-end recap!

Top Community Content of 2011

In order to be considered for this list, content must be public and created during 2011.  Also the number of likes, ratings, views, comments, and overall web traffic was used to determine the order.

  2. Why Follow others in the Community? by GinoRossi
  3. And the new Jive Community Manager is … by Ryan Rutan

Hats Off - Recap

What Have I Been Doing?

When I first came onto the Jive Community, there was an immediate call to action raised by many of you:  SPAM.  In the short time I have been here there hasn't been a day that has gone by where I haven't had at least an eye on the SPAM problem.  Thanks to the help of John Schwiller and a small change Handy trick for managing SPAM in User Profiles I can stand here (in digital form at least) and say that to date,

I have purged over 300 User Groups (abandoned/SPAM-ridden), 500 pieces of content, and over 4000 SPAM profiles from the Jive Community.

You've also heard me talk on and on about Regional User Groups.  As some of you may have seen today by a surge in activity on my part, I have completed the initial stages of our Regional User Groups pilot, which can be seen here:  The specified item was not found.  In addition to Regional User Groups, we are looking to revitalize our thought leadership endeavors in the JC.  If you see a group that interests you, or would like to participate in a group on an unlisted topic, please let me know and we will do our best to assemble the group and participants for you to engage.

Oh yeah, somewhere in between there I broadcasted your tweets on a 7-Story Digital Billboard in Times Square, and  completed a small blog series  with the help of my colleague Deirdre Walsh called the The 12 Days of Conversations ... If you haven't read them ... you should check them out and weigh in.  Especially on Day 12: What are your social business predictions for 2012? before its too late to say, "I told you so!". =)

Lastly, as promised at JiveWorld11, I have been hard at work on the "The specified item was not found." plugin in my "free time" (between the hours of 11PM - 3AM).

So here is what I got for you now:  a video sneak peak.  .

P.S. Dont forget to thank Seth on Twitter,  "@SethHitchings - Hats off and thanks for the help with Evernote Plugin for Jive!  Sincerely, the JC @JiveSoftware"

What's Next?

You may ask, "Ryan, where do you get all this energy?" and that would be a good question.  Since I dont drink caffeine, the only thing I can think of is a raw untapped passion for the power of social business. =)  So what is next for me?  I plan to relax and enjoy this New Year's holiday weekend, and come back next week ready to keep moving the Jive Community Onward and Upward in 2012 and beyond!

From all of us at Jive, we wish everyone a safe and happy new year!  See you in 2012!

Sincerely,

Ryan Rutan - Your Community Manager

P.S.  If you were the community manager, where would you focus your time?  Help me understand what's important to you and help me incorporate that into my road map.

Remember:  This is not MY Community ... this is OUR Community!

It's been another eventful week here in the JC ... so this is whats going down.

Community Highlights

This week we had two amazing blog posts posted, so rather than choosing one...I'm going to choose both.

Do you "bee"lieve in community? in Internal Community Managers by john ridings

... If you ever need an easy to remember analogy describing community collaboration, I hope this serves that purpose.

Community Advocates: Your Secret Weapon in Going Global and Viral, By Claire Flanagan, CSC in The specified item was not found. by Claire Flanagan

In summary, advocates can:

  • Be your local story tellers to their peers, to others in the industry or with other members;
  • Demonstrate best practices for community use to be emulated by others in the community;
  • Be a powerful front line source for member support and answers;

....

If you have a moment, take a look at these posts and Bookmark / Rate / Like accordingly.  We greatly appreciate both John and Claire's time for sharing their insights. =)

Remember, if you have a conversation, idea, or blog post that you'd like to get out into the community...please let me know and I can highlight as appropriate.

Hats Off

This episode of Hats Off is a bit special for me, as I get to promote a former colleague of mine.  His name is a Rene Cacheaux.  Back in February 2011, Rene and I were talking about an application to salvage whiteboard conversations in meetings, and how nice it would be if you could just take a picture with your iPhone or iPad ... and upload them to Jive.  About 24 hours later, Rene stops by my desk and says..."Hey, check this out".  Low and behold, he had developed a functioning prototype application for his iPhone.  Needless to say, he had caught the social bug.  =) Fast forward 10 months, and he has put together a nice looking application on the iTunes App Store in his spare time that leverages the new REST APIs in Jive5.

Mobile Snap Share for iOS - Now Available!

Take picture(s) of anything and have them uploaded to your registered Jive instance as a single/multi-page PDF.  This will allow you to continue your conversation via Inline Comments in the Preview interface on top of your pictures.  For more information, you can visit the following links:

If you give this app a a try, please take a moment to provide feedback to Rene and Rate his App in the Apple App Store.  He's got a lot of ideas for this app and would love to hear your thoughts as he looks at the next release.

For the past few weeks, the IPO preparations have consumed most of my time. (See Paving the new way to the NASDAQ ... with Social Business)  Probably the single most fun project I've done in a long time recently came to a close .. and was a great success.  Here is a picture of the 7-story digital board at Times Square that showed your tweets on the day of our IPO.  We are awaiting a high-quality video from NASDAQ.  Once received, we will upload the video to the community so people can see their tweets on the billboard.  Stay tuned!

Many thanks to greg.allen for his awesome design!

In addition to this I've started moving forward on a few more Regional User Groups, such as the Switzerland User Group, Germany User Group, and UK User Group (updated).

If you haven't noticed, I've also been writing a blog series called the Introducing the 12 Days of Conversations ... in Jive Talks.  Just posted Day 10: Where do you draw the line for social in your business? ... and 2 more to go!  For fun, you should check out the Day 8:  What movie quote best represents the state of your social business?

What's Next?

I will be out of the office most of next week, returning just before the new year.  As such, I do not anticipate accomplishing anything too magnanimous, but I do know that all the conversations around Documentation, Community IA, etc... have been going really well and we are almost to a point where we can start the first phases.   So stay tuned!

It's been another eventful week (and a half) here in the JC ... so this is whats going down.

System Announcement Recap:

Post Jive Community Migration Recap

Email Preferences Reset?

It has been discussed recently by people receiving more emails that normal after the JC migration.  Upon review, we believe we have discovered a possible explanation.  We have validated that all configurations are identical between the two systems, as well as preferences migrated between them.  The only exception is the new mailing infrastructure, which we eluded to in previous updates regarding email digests being disabled.  We believe that the issues we detected a while back were in fact more problematic than expected.  Initial tests show that the current mail infrastructure and Jive installation are working correctly and sending out emails according to the code base.

At this time, we will continue to monitor; however, the solution that has come out of the community, which is to update your preferences to stop sending email for all Followed Activity, is the proper course of action at this time if you feel that this is necessary.

Email Digests Re-Enabled

As promised, our mail infrastructure has been updated ... and we have re-enabled the email digest feature in the Jive Community.

Out of Office Issue(s)

After some review, we have noticed that there were some configurations that needed to be updated to potentially curb the surge in Out of Office emails in the Jive Community.  We have instituted the changes and they are active at this point.  We will continue to monitor reports (if any) to make sure this issue is put to rest.  As always, we appreciate everyone's assistance and patience.

What Have I Been Doing?

This past week I have taken many of my first steps in making changes to the JC (finally).  I have recently deployed the SBS Widget Pack - Plugin and QuickLinks Plugin to the Jive Community and will be starting on navigation changes on Overview dashboards around the community.

Getting Started in the Jive Community - User Profile

This document is a first step at defining some best practices in the Jive Community.  Take a look at it, and let me know your thoughts.  You can expect us to engineer the JC to make these best practices easier to accomplish by all users.  Have an idea on a way you use the Jive Community to get the best results? Let us know!

Release documentation has also been a focus, as mentioned last week.  We are currently looking at solutions that will vary based on time to delivery.   Options being considered include providing incremental/more timely updates on a higher frequency (advantage: faster information, disadvantage: possible fragmentation) ... or more comprehensive updates (advantage: more complete, disadvantage: less timely).  Either option would be more frequent than the current cadence for sure.  Any preliminary thoughts before we provide a formal survey/poll is welcome.

What's Next?

Actually moving forward on many of the changes that have been in-queue waiting for the migration to complete, and post-migration issues to subside.  Very excited to get to work.

Reminder: If you haven't done so yet, please make sure to link your Twitter to the Jive Community, and use the tag #socbiz to have your status updated in the JC.

Thanks to Brian Gil and team for getting this setup and rolled out!  See his blog post Mobile access now available! in the Mobile group for more information on how to get setup.

Hats Off?

Well I think it is pretty apparent who gets the Hats Off this week, and that's has to be Karen Laundon from GE.  Check out this video she posted as part of an internal contest at GE.  - https://community.jivesoftware.com/message/870532#870532

If you get the chance...show some love and like / rate this video on YouTube.  If you wont do it for me, do it because she's playing a ukulele!!! How cool is that!!?

Thanks Jeffrey Murnan and Karen  for sharing this catchy tune.  And just so we can get an answer to the obvious question, when will it be available on iTunes?

What Have I Been Doing?

First off, going to say that my blog post may be a little short this week (relatively) ... if for no other reason than I had a realization this week that I have been typing some mighty lengthy blog posts.  It dawned on me that one line on a 27" widescreen monitor is about 5-6 lines on a traditional screen size, so I'm trying this blog post with a different window size.  We'll see how it goes. =)

Lately, I've been doing the final prep stages for laying out some changes in the JC coming soon.  As some of you may have seen, I published another update to my SBS Widget Pack - Plugin adding some simple Twitter wrapper widgets for their standard Favorites, List, Profile, and Search widgets.  Plan to use these in various locations in the Jive Community ... and as a result ... promote your conversations more.

So if you haven't done so yet, make sure to link your Twitter to the Jive Community, and use the tag #socbiz to have your status updated in the JC.

https://community.jivesoftware.com/twitter-user-preferences!input.jspa

Not to be forgotten, I have been working with Support and our Documentation team to find a way to efficiently share issues found after software has been released.  We are currently working through the logistics of balancing too much information vs. too little.  We are optimistic that we are closing in on a solution that will provide a relatively quick short-term solution that meets the desired intent and is with-in the realm of sustainable moving forward.  We hope to share the artifacts of these efforts soon.  Be on the look out for a poll asking about acceptable forms for posting the errata information.

Finally, I was able to get some good feedback and buy-in on my proposals for the new IA for the Jive Community, so I'm hoping those revisions will make it through review soon ... such that I can share them with the rest of you to get some more feedback.  I'm surprised I kept that all straight in my head.

What's Next?

More of the same unfortunately.  User Group awareness, IA ratification, vetting changes to the JC, and hopefully executing some of the changes sooner than later.

Do you have a discussion / idea / document in the Jive Community that you would like to promote in this update?  Perhaps you have a question and really need to get some more feedback, or you have an up and coming idea that needs a little nudge.  Either way, let me know and I'll be happy to promote it.

Our first edition comes from our good friend John Schwiller who would like to promote is a discussion regarding the fine-line of content privacy exemptions.  Check it! =)

https://community.jivesoftware.com/thread/157235

Do you have plugins that you would like to see installed and operational on the Jive Community?

If so, let me know with a comment, for now... and will keep the suggestions in mind. =)

What are your Thoughts?

If you were the community manager, where would you focus your time?  Help me understand what's important to you and help me incorporate that into my road map.
