It's been another eventful week here in the JC ... so this is whats going down.

System Announcement Recap:

Post Upgrade Notes:

All in all, the upgrade went very well.  Many of the new features that we rolled out are already being put to use; however, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the new Share / DM changes.  As many of you noticed, we have enabled Share and Direct Message functionality; however, it requires that there be a reciprocal following between 2 people before it will allow either party to leverage said features.  While we have no doubt that this is surely going to help us curb SPAM, we do realize that it has had some lingering affects on spontaneous Share / DM.  Please know that we are actively discussing the situation internally to see what can be done.

In the mean time, the suggested work around is to Follow people and establish the reciprocal follow needed to Share / DM.

Hats Off

In this episode of Hats Off, I'd like to issue a collective shout out to Nikki Bussard in Midwest Regional Group.  They are the first to setup an offline meetup in the Jive Community using the new Jive Events Extension.  (see: Mid-west Users Group Chicago Meet Up).  I am definitely excited for the potential of this new plugin in the JC, and offline meetups with regional user groups are just the first use-case!  Thanks Nikki Bussard

Do you have any suggestions on how you think we can use the Events Plugin?  Care to share?

What Have I Been Doing?

This week has been pretty busy.  It started with Community Manager Appreciation Day.  BTW, thank you from both Kristina and myself for all the praise on both Twitter and in the JC!  Jill Ross John Schwiller  Edward Ford and others!

Happy Community Manager Appreciation Day ... Who Do You Appreciate?

Post upgrade communications and follow-up, a little bit of development, and a whole lot of work on the JC's information architecture moving forward.  I've promised a high-level view of my findings, and while I am not able to share any details yet, I can share a high-level view of my thought-process.  Each one of these lines represents a direction that we hope to address with JC.  As you can, lots of lines...means lots of work.  But I am confident that this will lead to some great things for the entire community!

I was able to sneak in some development time this week as well.  Because I wanted to code a plugin to help with the reciprocal Follow issue, I didnt get the time to work on Evernote, The specified item was not found. ... so it wasn't a total loss.  But will have some cycles next week as well, so we'll see.

As I announced last week, we are working on creating a social business shared blogging place in the Jive Community, if you think you'd be interested in blogging there, please let us know ... you can join john ridings as one of the first!

Also, dont forget to check out these active conversations,

What's Next?

Next week I will be traveling to meet my colleagues in Portland for the first time.  Definitely excited.  As such, I'll be on a plane ... and have some development time free. We'll see what comes from that.  Beyond that, more future looking and acting for the JC.  No doubt information architecture will also play a big role in next week conversations as well.  So stay tuned!

BTW:  Would the community be interested in me highlighting an Idea of the week?  If so, @mention me and the idea in a status update, and I'll keep a running list for this update.

What are your Thoughts?

If you were the community manager, where would you focus your time?  Help me understand what's important to you and help me incorporate that into my road map.

Remember:  This is not MY Community ... this is OUR Community!

System Announcement Recap:

Upgrade Alert: Jive Community scheduled to upgrade to 5.0.2.0 on Friday, January 20th, 2012 @ 7 PST (Tonight!!!!)

During this upgrade, the Jive Community will be down, actual downtime not yet calculated, but we are comfortable saying less than 1 hour at this time.

Note: This maintenance will only affect the Jive Community (this community), it will not affect the availability of any other Jive hosted community.  To help keep our support engineers focused on your highest priority issues, please raise any concerns here: Open Discussion Re: Jive Community Upgrade on January 20th, 2012

Some notables changes for this release:

Hats Off

In this episode of Hats Off, I'd like to give a shout out to Ryan King.  Not only is he the author or the Jive Events Extension 5.0.2.0-2, which will be rolling out with the upgrade tonight (AWESOME!!!!!!), but he also drafted a nifty tutorial in the Developer community showing how to add tabs/buttons in the Jive 5 interface using the plugin framework. - How to: Add a Tab to a Place

If you find his  tutorial useful, definitely take a moment to share your feedback with Ryan on the community!  Thanks Ryan King for sharing such awesome stuff!

Do you have any tips, tricks, or best practices you use on Jive to get your work done?  Care to share?

What Have I Been Doing?

Once again this week has been focused on the future.  Starting with tonight's upgrade, and laying out projects and priorities for the first half of 2012.  One program that I am excited to get up and running is a Community Blogging space.  In short, we know it's hard to blog.  It's even harder to commit to blogging an entire series.  Well we think we can help reduce some of the burden by creating a shared and moderated community blogging space in the Jive Community where people can blog their thoughts about social business. All we have to do is come up with a name for the space, some rules and guidelines, and we'll get it set up soon.  Would anyone be interested in voting on the name, or making suggestions?  Any body interested in being one of the first bloggers?

I'm continued to be amazed at the number of people who have reached out and joined a The specified item was not found. in their area.  Thank you to everyone who extends a welcoming hand to all the new users!  There are already talks of setting up offline meetups in the near future Midwest User Group DACH User Group (something we think the Events module will help orchestrate moving forward), so please be sure to reach out to your Jive Sales Representative, or myself, and see how Jive can help facilitate.

What's Next?

With the Jive Community upgrade behind me, I plan to turn my focus towards the Information Architecture and start rolling out pieces of the new structure as they gain approval.  I was not able to spend any time on the this week, but I'm optimistic some time will surface next week.

Coming up on January 23rd, is Community Manager Appreciation Day, care to share how all you community managers out there in Internal Community Managers and External Community Managers going to celebrate?

System Announcement Recap:

Upgrade Alert: Jive Community tentatively scheduled to upgrade to 5.0.2.0 on Friday, January 20th, 2012 @ <EVENING TBD> PST

We are currently in the final stages of UAT and have some minor issues to resolve, and some test cases to complete; however, overall things look quite promising.  As such, to try and give our customers the best heads up possible, we are announcing this tentative date/time.

  • Upgrade all modules to their latest and greatest, including Jive Mobile Plugin and Jive Ideation Module 5.0
  • Install some new plugins to the JC, one of which is the recently released Community Manager Reports Plugin.
  • Re-enable Direct Messaging and Modify User Relationships to Approved Followers vs. Friendships.
  • Disabling (not purging) a significant number of inactive/abandoned accounts to optimize the User Index, improve @mention accuracy, and address aspects of historical SPAM in the JC.

Note:  All these updates are still pending UAT sign-off; however, we are optimistic and thought we'd share the news.

Hats Off

In this episode of Hats Off, I'd like to give a shout out to Dave Myers for sharing his HTML Widget: How to Create a Content Slider and HTML Widget: How to Create a Stock Widget documents in the Developer community.  For those that have wanted to create a section on your Overview dashboard that rotates content, or display a basic stock ticker, these are must sees!  Thanks Dave for sharing with the community!

What's the coolest thing you've done with an HTML Widget(s) in Jive?  Care to share?

Special thanks to Nikhil Nulkar for becoming a driving force in building up the India User Group roster!  I am confident that complementing online discussions with face-to-face interactions can only lead to higher community satisfaction and better proliferation of social business best practices. That is what JiveWorld does, and we all love it!  Check out the The specified item was not found. space to find thought leadership or regional user groups in the JC.

What Have I Been Doing?

This week has been focused on the future, primarily prepping/testing for the upcoming Jive Community upgrade.  I have no doubt that this upgrade will provide our community with an even more powerful platform to collaborate!

Also, Karl Rumelhart and team are still looking for feedback on the open discussion.  If you have a second, feel free to share any and all feedback.  We are listening! =)

Want to improve search relevancy in Jive?  Here's your chance!

What's Next?

Next week will be all about dotting the I's and crossing the T's for the JC upgrade, as well as, continuing to work on aspects for the future of the JC.  Hopefully, I'll be able to spend some cycles on the ... as I'm very excited to try and get it to an Alpha release ASAP.

System Announcement Recap:

Maintenance Update: Jive Community Restart on Tuesday, January 10th, 2012 @ 8PM PST

The Jive Community will perform a mild maintenance task on Tuesday, January 10th, 2011 at 8PST

The maintenance should be completed by 9PM, and should NOT result in downtime; however, during this window users may experience intermittent UI sluggishness.

Note:  This maintenance only applies to the Jive Community.  Any and all other communities hosted by Jive ARE NOT AFFECTED.  To keep our support staff focused on your highest priority issues, please escalate any questions regarding this announcement to Ryan Rutan directly.

Upgrade Alert: Jive Community will be upgrading to 5.0.2.0 in early Q1

As promised, shortly after our migration to hosting we have our eyes set on upgrading the JC to the latest and greatest version of Jive 5.  With this upgrade, we are planning to install some new plugins including the recently released Community Manager Reports Plugin and some other treats that we'll keep secret for now.

As part of this upgrade, we finally plan to re-enable Direct Messaging and change User Relationships to Followers vs. Friends.  One other aspect worth mentioning:  we will be fatiguing a significant number of SPAM and abandoned accounts (last logged in before 2010) with this upgrade.  What does that mean?  It just means that we will be disabling the account (not purging anything).  Our intent is to clean up the User index (improve @mention accuracy) and reduce the number of email digests sent out to the abandoned accounts.

Note:  All these updates are still pending UAT sign-off; however, we are optimistic and thought we'd share the news.

What Have I Been Doing?

As some of you may have noticed, I've started making some changes around the JC.  You may or may not have noticed the new Home Page, the User The specified item was not found. pilot, or even the new JiveWorld space (check out this discussion: JiveWorld Alumni - how has JiveWorld changed you?) .  These are still interim steps in our new community re-org, but good steps nonetheless.  There are a slew of other changes in the works and planned through out the year ... so stay tuned!

A special "Thank You" goes out to everyone who has taken the initiative to join a Regional User Group, and people like nbussarddannyryan, Christina Zurcher, and dougmackay who have welcomed users into their regional groups on the JC!

Also, please note the recent discussion I started in the Product Innovation and Feedback space:

Want to improve search relevancy in Jive?  Here's your chance!

Let Karl Rumelhart and his team know how they can make the search relevancy in Jive better for you!

Beyond that, this week has been all about closing out 2011 and ramping up 2012 with the JC 5.0.2.0 upgrade to start it off!.

What's Next?

Over the coming weeks, I hope to continue working on the JC community structure,  soliciting users to join regional user groups, and looking for opportunities to promote thought leadership in social business on the Jive Community.  If you have ideas on how you'd like to participate, or just general feedback, please let me know.

Reminder: If you haven't done so yet, please make sure to link your Twitter to the Jive Community, and use the tag #socbiz to have your status updated in the JC.
