It's been a long time coming (over a year), yet we finally found the perfect time to chat with Andrew Mishalove! From launching his second Jive community, to flying all over the world presenting at conferences, to working from his "office" at 39,000 feet, I was happy to get 45 minutes on the phone with Andrew to learn more about his workstyle and his exciting new gig.



Leigh: Where do you work?

Andrew: I work at CallMiner as Director of Enterprise Social Business.



Leigh: How would you describe your current role?

Andrew: Our initiative is strategic as far as where CallMiner is taking the business. Currently our community is in Phase 1, but we've planned three unique Phases. Phase 1 is about creating a thought leadership industry news and best practices space and a place for peer-to-peer networking of our customers.


My role involves the strategy behind the initial launch and ongoing strategy work in terms of the evolution of the platform so we're always bringing value to our customers and prospects. My role is very strategic and very operational at the same time because I'm once again working with a lean team and limited resources. I'm working with internal stakeholders and execs, aligning with sales, marketing and product teams as well as managing our vendor partnerships. I'm also on-boarding content creators, vendors and partners that will help us put together case studies and whitepapers available to the folks coming to our community. Finally, I'm closely aligning with customer advocates who can help champion the community so other users gain value from the experience.


So I would say there's not an area of the Jive community that I'm not going to touch at a detailed level. I'm living and breathing Jive, all day, every day.


Leigh: So how do you use Jive at CallMiner?

Andrew: On December 7th we launched our external community called The initial use case was to create a peer-to-peer user networking community, which is specific to CallMiner customers, focusing on product specific collaboration and sharing best practices.


There's a more open area of the community that holds industry news and best practices. This is more thought leadership content that has everything from videos to webinars, blogs, whitepapers, case studies and infographics. We're leveraging Jive technology to build community around the customer engagement space. It's really to associate CallMiner with thought leadership and to provide folks with a resource in the business, and leverage the best practices section of the site to intrigue prospects into becoming customers.

Leigh: Since this is your second Jive community launch, what did you learn from the last one to make this one more successful? What were you the most happy about with this launch?


  1. Content planning is absolutely essential. I've been to tons of conferences and I keep hearing 'content is king'. It's absolutely true. Without robust content, you can create a beautiful site, but if there's nothing to draw users there and back, all that technology goes to waste. For my first launch we didn't have a great communication strategy for launch, nor an on-going content development strategy.  We eventually got this going and overall the community was highly successful, but it took longer than I had hoped.
  2. The CallMiner community strategy development was very condensed, but we put a lot of time and effort into the strategy. I started on October 5, I had two international conferences (Berlin & London) in between my first day and the community launch on December 7. We wanted to have a great design. We wanted to provide an easy transition for customers that were on a former platform to the new Jive platform. We wanted to have a great content strategy, so now we're working on a strong editorial calendar.
  3. Really good launch communications is essential. We have a great marketing team that is supporting us with great content, newsletters, etc.


I'm mostly happy because it was flawlessly executed; not one issue! I've received nothing by accolades and kudos from our users and internal stakeholders. Because of the success of the launch, I'm getting flooded with ideas (internal and external) for the community, and we're getting strong executive sponsorship. Our internal teams feel like it's a good value prop for prospects, and they're excited that the new customer base will have lots more functionality and they can find the intelligence they need much faster to make them more effective.


Leigh: Are you attending JiveWorld16? If so, what are you looking forward to the most?

Andrew: Definitely. I've been to the last 3 JiveWorlds, and I was focused on internal use cases at that time. I'll switch gears and network with external community leaders this time. I'm really excited about it, as it presents a whole new set of challenges. It expands my knowledge base of the Jive products and about building communities in general.


I'm also excited about getting back on stage; I'll be telling my new story about how Jive is helping to change our business. The community is already having a huge impact on the customer engagement space and in particular how CallMiner is able to communicate with customers and reach out to prospects.



Leigh: Are you familiar with the Jive WorkTypes? If so, what was your WorkType?

Andrew: Yes. It was very much on point, but I feel like I fall into a lot of these. The one that stands out above all is the Energizer. I draw my energy from the work I do and from the impact it has on my organization. I then share that passion with others and like to movitate them like Jordy from wolfofwallstreet




Leigh: What's your computer situation... Do you use a Mac or PC (or something else)?

Andrew: PC's don't come near my home. Mac til the end. iPhones. Apple TV. Mac mini. MacBook, MacBook Pro, iMac.



Leigh: Tell us how you use your mobile device?

Andrew: Mainly it enables me to work anywhere anytime: email, calendar, chat, social. I'm able to keep my ear to the ground in my work and personal life or just for fun. It's all about being productive personally and professionally. Apps that are currently open: messages, mail, phone, calendar, Google, Google Maps, NFL fantasy football, Uber, Facebook, Skype, Skype for Business, Jive, Twitter, American Airlines, FlightAware, GoToMeeting.


Leigh: Besides Jive, what apps/software/tools can't you live without?

Andrew: On my phone: Google hangouts. Twitter. LinkedIn. On my computer: Chrome, mail, Excel, Skype, GoToMeeting, BlueJeans, Password Manager, Google Drive.


Leigh: Do you have a favorite non-computer gadget?

Andrew: My cars. I choose to invest some of my money in exotic automobiles; I have two rare exotic cars. Every week I take them out on a drive to keep them running.

I also used to be a DJ - so I have two Technic 1200 Turntables. It's classic DJ equipment. I'm definitely an audiophile; I love my sound equipment.



Leigh: What you surround yourself with is important, what's your work space like?

Andrew: I'm very clean and organized. OCD. There's nothing extraneous on my desk. You can take a ruler and measure the distance between everything uniformly.



For this role I'd say I'm 50% at my home office in Miami, and 50% remote (ie: conferences, in office, on a plane, hotel rooms, coffee shop, at parents).


Leigh: What do you listen to while you work?

Andrew: White Noise. Silence.


Leigh: How do you balance work and life?

Andrew: I don't do this very well . I will take very few breaks throughout the day or week, which may not be the best technique. I do Yoga and meditation to stay grounded. I work late hours during the week to have flexibility on the weekends to do some personal and enjoyable things. It's nice to have the ability to work while I'm out and about. I try to continue working through the day - to accomplish all I can. I'll typically work on Friday night in order to enjoy some downtime on Saturday or Sunday.


My home also brings me a lot of peace and when I'm feeling overwhelmed, I will breathe and look out over my balcony:



Leigh: What's your sleep routine like?

Andrew: I'll take in some TV, around 11pm when I'm starting to unwind. I'll go to bed around 1am, and I'm up around 7am-7:30am. Which doesn't satisfy my sleep need, but I've been living at this pace for the last 4-5 years. My adrenaline is pumping when I'm on work mode which allows me to function. When I'm on vacation I often crash and sleep a lot.


Leigh: Are you more of an introvert or an extrovert?

Andrew: It depends on the topic and activity. If I'm passionate about it I'm an extrovert.


Leigh: What's the best advice you've ever received (and from whom)?

Andrew: There are 3 that come to mind:


1)  From a fortune cookie:  "Success is getting up just one more time than you fall down."  I'm never afraid to take calculated risks and learn along the way as long as the lessons are manageable and are not doing damage to my cause. I'm constantly taking calculated risks and expanding my zone of comfort so I can grow and continue to be successful at the things that I do. I'm allergic to mediocrity.


2)  "The only impossible journey is the one you never begin." - Tony Robbins, a motivational speaker, personal finance instructor and self-help author.


3)  workingoutloud - John Stepper - "Sharing your knowledge in an observable narrative way so that it may help others.  You will also learn from those who are working in the same way, grow your network and build trust among your peers."

Leigh: Any last minute thoughts?

Andrew: It's been an amazing experience working with the Jive technology, and it's opened up a lot of new doors for me. Moving from one Jive client to another means more challenges, and I look forward to continuing to grow and learn about what Jive to can do for everyone, for us internally and for our clients. I'm grateful to have the opportunity to work with Jive, to create bonding professional and personal relationships. It's been a great experience.

Does anyone want to pick Andrew's brain about his new external community launch?

I met Nikhil Nulkar many years ago at JiveWorld13. This was also the JiveWorld where he was mentioned on Mainstage as the attendee that traveled in from the farthest away! He was incredibly friendly, very encouraging and very into the gamification at the conference. It is always a pleasure to talk with Nikhil and I jump at any chance I get to do so. Enjoy getting to know how Nikhil Nulkar works:


Leigh: Where do you work?

Nikhil: I work in the Social Media & Workplace Reimagination team at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). We bring in a combination of Social Interaction Design, Gamification & Human Cloud Analytics to re-imagine how organizations co-create with customers and how employees collaborate in a hyper connected workplace.


Leigh: How would you describe your current job?

Nikhil: I would like to call myself a Consultant. Keeping it simple and generic gives me the ability to work across a breadth of opportunities to help clients understand the changing workplace. In my role as a consultant, I strategize and guide customers to re-imagine their workplace providing them with advice to improve their internal & external collaboration ecosystems. Unlike my previous role, which was internally focused, here I get a chance to work daily with a new customer and a new challenge.

Leigh: Are you familiar with the Jive WorkTypes? If so, what was your WorkType?

Nikhil: Yes. I’m an Explorer and Planner.


Leigh: What was your favorite part of attending JiveWorld last year?

Nikhil: People. Meeting people, sharing experiences and building relationship with other customers, partners and Jivers is an enriching experience. It was my third JiveWorld and I always look forward to meeting old and new friends in person. IMHO there’s tremendous learning opportunity at JiveWorld, not only about Jive as a company or platform, but about the larger social business community network.


JiveWorld13 was a turning point in many ways, and I would like to point to my experience report from that year - a good time to reflect and know that we’ve come a long way.

Leigh: So how do you use Jive at work (internal community, external community, etc.)?

Nikhil: I have used Jive as an internal community for the past 5 years and now in my current role, I use it in every possible way, depending on the client’s ecosystem.


Leigh: What's your computer situation... Do you use a Mac or PC (or something else)?

Nikhil: Macbook Air. I love Apple (not a crazy fanboy though) and I am mostly working remotely or traveling, so it works best for me.


Leigh: Tell us what you use for your mobile device?

Nikhil: Mostly an iPhone. But occasionally an iPad too. Earlier this year I happened to work completely out of my mobile devices for almost a couple of months. It was quite an experience.

Leigh: Besides Jive, what apps/software/tools can't you live without?

Nikhil: Browser. Tweetdeck on Mac and Tweetbot on iPhone.


Leigh: Do you have a favorite non-computer gadget?

Nikhil: Camera


Leigh: What you surround yourself with is important, what's your work space like?

Nikhil: It’s strange, but I’ve never been one of those who deck-up their workspace tables. A large part of my last few work years have been remote working - so one would typically find household and travel related items around my workspace.

Leigh: What do you listen to while you work?

Nikhil: I love electronic music. It being a wide spectrum in itself helps me change the tempo based on my work-mood. Try give a listen to artists like Above & Beyond or Eric Prydz.


Leigh: How do you balance work and life?

Nikhil: In today’s era and with the kind of role I am in, work and life are very fluid and interlinked. When you travel and mostly work remotely, you end up having work and life overflow into each others territories. Having said that, loving what you do, helps in ensuring there’s never a dull day. Also, it’s important to prioritize and give your 100% when involved to ensure you do justice to the task.


Leigh: What's your sleep routine like?

Nikhil: I love my sleep. I usually love to have my eight hours of sleep. Though I end up sleeping quite late in the night.


Leigh: Are you more of an introvert or an extrovert?

Nikhil: Extrovert.


Leigh: What's the best advice you've ever received (and from whom)?

Nikhil: “You can never connect the dots looking forward” and the entire Steve Jobs speech at Stanford University. It’s the most inspiring thing I know of and I always go back and listen to it, every now and then.

Leigh: Thanks for reminding us of this amazing speech. I'm watching it again, right now!

Does anyone have any questions for Nikhil?

I came across Timothy Hales because he's a very active member in the External Communities Group. This is one of those community moments when you feel like you know the person just through your interaction in a community, even though you've never met face to face. Timothy has a fantastic (and very packed) workstyle, and I'm happy he shared it with everyone through this interview!


Leigh: Where do you work?

Timothy: I work for Esri, a mapping software company. Our technology enables organizations to create responsible and sustainable solutions to problems at local and global scales. It is based out of Redlands, CA, but I work out of our Charlotte, NC regional office.

Leigh: How would you describe your current job?

Timothy: I am the Enterprise Community Manager for GeoNet, our Jive-x community. I technically do not have a job description, but you could say that I do about everything imaginable as it relates to our community. I manage the day-to-day operations of the community including user engagement, moderation, training, technical support, reporting, system administration, product testing, and more.


Leigh: Are you familiar with the Jive WorkTypes? If so, what was your WorkType?

Timothy: Optimizer


Leigh: How do you think your WorkType plays into how you get work done in Jive?

Timothy: My WorkType helps me focus on improving the user experience of our customers. Every time I am presented with a workflow or task, I am always searching for a better way to accomplish those things. Jive provides a great platform, but I am always giving feedback on how it can be better. When Jive applies this feedback to future releases, it not only helps our community but also many other Jive customers as well.


Leigh: Did your team have a chance to take the WorkType Finder quiz? Have you all talked about your results?

Timothy: Team?!? I am supposed to have a team? I have a lot of great resources for various projects, but I am the only one dedicated 100% to the community.


Leigh: So how do you use Jive at work (internal community, external community, etc.)?

Timothy: Jive is an external community for our customers. It provides a way for them to ask questions and troubleshoot software problems. They also collaborate around projects and use the platform as a way to share code.
We are working hard to build other forms of engagement through the migration of our blog and idea platforms. My colleagues are very innovative in how they apply the community to their particular industry. For example our Education Team uses the community to engage students in discussions for their massive open online courses (MOOCs). We also just launched a new series called Esri Ten For where the community asks questions and an expert answers ten of them on video.

Leigh: What a great series!


Leigh: What's your computer situation... Do you use a Mac or PC (or something else)?

Timothy: I just recently switched to a Mac for the first time a couple weeks ago. I've always used a PC, but was looking for a system that could increase production for graphics and video design, improve processing performance when running code when managing the community using the Jive API, and a system that travels well since it's my main connection to the community 24/7. It has taken some getting used to, but I absolutely love it. No plans to go back.

Leigh: Tell us what you use for your mobile device?

Timothy: In the past, I have used the Palm Pre, Motorola Q, and Samsung Galaxy; yet the iPhone 5c is by far best and most stable device I have ever had. There is no way I am switching from Apple. Like a friend said, "Apple's walled garden may be small, but it's a very nice garden."



Leigh: Besides Jive, what apps/software/tools can't you live without?


  • Waze - The best navigation app out there. Sure, I know how to get to work or my house, but this app helps me avoid accidents, road closures, and traffic jams.
  • Goodbudget - I still believe in the importance of creating a budget, and there is no better way to manage your spending than with a cash envelope budget.
  • EverNote - Although I use OneNote for work, I use EverNote for personal items. I like how I can access it on my computer, iPad, or iPhone.
  • Snagit - I am always grabbing screenshots of issues and basic how-to steps. TechSmith Snagit makes it very simple.


Leigh: Do you have a favorite non-computer gadget?

Timothy: That's a hard one since everything nowadays is computerized. I enjoy cooking and so there are a variety of kitchen gadgets that I like, but probably my favorite right now is my pull-up bar. It's portable so I can have it in my bedroom, kitchen, or anywhere with a door frame. I've added a bit of bling from the past year to help with motivation. It also doubles as a monkey bar for my kids. They try very hard to do pull-ups, but more than anything they enjoy swinging on it.

Leigh: How do you stay organized? What's your favorite to-do list manager?

Timothy: At home, I am not even close to being organized as compared to my work organization. OneNote is my friend and the only way I stay up on work. I take a scrum-style approach to how I handle my daily tasks. I have a "back-log" for random ideas and tasks that don't have to get done in the near future. My "current" list is for tasks that have a due date or must get done soon. The "today" list is of tasks that I have pulled from the "current" list that I plan to get done each day. The "completed" list helps me realize that I am actually getting things done because who doesn't like the feeling of accomplishment? I do a full review of each list every Friday morning. That helps me prepare to hit the ground running Monday morning.

Leigh: What you surround yourself with is important, what's your work space like?

Timothy: I like having a clean desk. I may have a bit of clutter in my drawers or overhead bin, but you won't find that on my desk. I am a very technical guy at heart, hence the reason for three monitors and the MacBook Pro. I start every morning with a cup of English Breakfast tea. Yes, it is sweet! I live in the South. I keep a water bottle close by to maintain my hydration. Slightly behind me are the handprints of my children and a bridal portrait of my wife.


Leigh: What's your best time-saving trick?

Timothy: Stay off of your devices. It is amazing how much time we waste every day looking at our phones.


Leigh: How do you balance work and life?

Timothy: I work some strange hours at times, but try to keep my work during normal business hours. Outside of those hours I make sure everyone is asleep or out of the house before breaking out the MacBook. So if you work with me you may get emails between Midnight and 6AM. I love spending time with my family! I have been married for 12 years and have four children (one girl and three boys). We play soccer, xBox, board games, Legos, Nerf guns, and a whole lot more. I am active in my local church and serve in our preschool department. In my spare time I enjoy running and staying fit. This year I took on the challenge of earning my Spartan Trifecta.

Leigh: My jaw just dropped. You do so much and with such a big family. Good on ya!


Leigh: What's your sleep routine like?

Timothy: Sleep... what's that? Haha. I'm usually in the bed by midnight and up by 6 am or so. With four kids I rarely sleep in and always go to bed way later than I should. I like to think I get more sleep than I actually do, but my Jawbone tells me otherwise. I get about six hours of sleep on average.

Leigh: Are you more of an introvert, ambivert or extrovert?

Timothy: Ambivert for sure. I have characteristics from both ends of the spectrum. I am the youngest of five children with the next oldest being 10 years older than me, so I grew up kind of as an only child. For this reason I tend to enjoy being by myself. However, this does not keep me from being social. I can strike up a conversation with anyone at any time. I really don't go out much unless it's with my family.


Leigh: What's the best advice you've ever received (and from whom)?

Timothy: One of the best pieces of advice came from a previous boss. He challenged me to continue my education. Not just the degree variety, but anything that helps me grow as person or advance my career. Since then, I am always looking for learning opportunities. Whether it be online classes, books, articles, seminars, or breakfast with an elder, just get out there an keep learning.


I don't know about y'all, but I'm certainly going to use some of his tips and I'm re-motivated to make the most of every day! Thank you so much, Timothy, for sharing your fantastic workstyle. Does anyone have any questions for Timothy?

I was excited for the opportunity to interview Alban Rampon, Enterprise Community Manager for the ARM Connected Community, as he is someone who is quite active in the Jive Community. Alban's WorkType profiles of Connector and Energizer made our interaction super smooth and extremely positive! Alban, I think your WorkTypes are right on! Thanks so much for being active in the Jive Community and for sharing a bit about yourself.


Leigh: Where do you work?

Alban: Hello Leigh, I work for ARM in Cambridge, UK. Not many people know us, but almost everyone is using our technology! Like a songwriter, we are commissioned to create the blueprints for chips. Then, for each song sold, we get royalties. For us to succeed, our partners have to succeed as the initial license fee is not enough to cover the R&D costs. Our community includes companies from every part of the ecosystem: semiconductor, operating system, mobile apps, etc. The chips are used in everything from vacuum cleaners, hard drives, mobile phones, tablets, cars and even in space. ARM Connected Community Partners List gives all companies who wish to publicly acknowledge enabling/using ARM technology.


Leigh: How would you describe your current job?
Alban: I am building relationships, connecting people and companies. I am the global community manager and community strategist and I'm delighted to have been invited to be a Jive Champion too.

Leigh: Hooray! Thanks for being a part of our Jive Champion program, Alban!


Leigh: Are you familiar with the Jive WorkTypes? If so, what was your WorkType?

Alban: Of course, I tried it as soon as the program was announced! My primary type is Connector and secondary is Energizer. I feel they are good matches. I tried the test a few times and I always get those two, even if the order sometimes differs.


Leigh: What was your favorite part of attending JiveWorld14?
Alban: Meeting the people I have been working with all year. I find the event exceptionally well organized. If you are working with online communities, I believe you should attend the event even if you're not yet a customer.

Leigh: So how do you use Jive at work (internal community, external community, etc.)?
Alban: We have an external support, partner, thought leadership and private collaboration community. We want to make the most of the platform!


Leigh: What's your computer situation... Do you use a Mac or PC (or something else)?
Alban: I use a PC with Windows and Linux. I've wanted to try a Mac to brand a mobile app for our community with analytics and URL pre-configured... I just haven't found the time yet.

Leigh: Tell us what you use for your mobile device?
Alban: I'm always on mobile and use an iPhone, an iPad and an Android smartphone . A community never closes.

Leigh: You got that right!



Leigh: Pick one word that best describes how you work.
Alban: I work on interruptions... except when I have my headphones on which means "please wait, your call is important to me..."
Leigh: So true! I think a lot of people work on interruptions, but you're one of the first to own it! Also, I like your strategy for limiting them.


Leigh: How do you stay organized? What's your favorite to-do list manager?
Alban: I love Wunderlist. They have been doing many integrations with other tools as well which is quite nice. I use it both at the office and at home, on all platforms... Give it a try, it's free.

Leigh: What you surround yourself with is important, what's your work space like?
Alban: I used to think it was clinical, until I looked at a picture of it . I tend to have what I need to do or need to think about on my desk. Also, I use a white board with notes to prioritize what I have to do. That's the best way I found to make sure I remember everyone/everything. I am so organized at the office that I don't like scheduling anything in my holidays.



Leigh: What do you listen to while you work?
Alban: I work in a noisy office with many people on the phone. When I need to focus, I put on my headphones with electronic music. I recommend deadmau5 and Daft Punk to guarantee isolation from ambient distraction!

Leigh: Totally agree that ambient distraction helps ensure isolation.


Leigh: Are you more of an introvert or an extrovert?
Alban: I am definitely an extrovert. However, I do enjoy thinking time alone very much too. If you ask, everyone will definitely say an extrovert though.

Leigh: What's the best advice you've ever received (and from whom)?
Alban: "Document on your community..." Most likely from The John Schwiller. Let me explain why! Everything you do in your emails is NOT scalable and needs to be repeated each time you have a new team member. Document once in your community and everyone will be able to help you. It's been useful so many times and it makes it so easy to on-board community members.

I greatly enjoyed collaborating with Clarissa Viana, Community Manager from Plusoft, in order to share her workstyle with others. Clarissa jumped out at me because she's on the top 10 leader board in the External Communities group. That's a hard thing to do! Also, being from Brazil, I was curious if there were any tactics, technology, etc., that those in different areas around the globe aren't aware of yet. Get to know Clarissa!


Leigh: Where do you work?

Clarissa: I'm Head of Community Managers (hopefully, it'll make sense) at iCustomer, a company of the Plusoft Group, located in São Paulo, SP, Brazil. Here we help other companies implement their own communities, but since this is pretty new here in Brazil, we have a lot going on here.

Leigh: How would you describe your current job?

Clarissa: I help my boss with the strategic planning, I'm responsible for the health of the communities we implement (doing engagement, monitoring activity and creating reports) including our own internal community and I manage the work of the CMs below me (there's currently only one, but as we get other projects my team will grow).

Leigh: Are you familiar with the Jive WorkTypes? If so, what is your primary and secondary WorkType?

Clarissa: Yes, I am an Explorer and a Energizer.


Leigh: How do you think your WorkType plays into how you get work done in Jive?

Clarissa: My workstype plays well into my role as a community manager that needs to connect with everyone all the time and also help drive strategy. Seeing the big picture and having good ideas are awesome to help getting things started on the right foot.

Leigh: So how do you leverage Jive technology to help companies work better together?

Clarissa: It helps people get things done in a easier and faster way. I see some of my friend's that don't 'Jive' and they have tons of emails, several meetings to attend and it gets in the way of actually doing your job. What I like most is the fact that you work closer with your entire team even though you're cities apart.

Leigh: What's your favorite part about implementing Jive communities for your clients?

Clarissa: I like showing them how their lives will be easier with a community, and I really love seeing the results. I also like sharing best practices, seeing people connecting with each other...

Leigh: What's your computer situation... Do you use a Mac or PC (or something else)?

Clarissa: PC

Leigh: Tell us what you use for your mobile device?

Clarissa: I have an iPhone, and it helps me answer things, and read discussions and documents when I'm on may way to work.

Leigh: Do you have a favorite editing tool?

Clarissa: I looove Jive for Office! I keep asking people that want to send me an email to post it on our Jive Community, specially through Jive for Office. You can do basically everything in the document without the need of logging in. It's perfect for someone that handles a lot of content on a daily basis.

Leigh: Pick one word that best describes how you work.

Clarissa: Engagement

Leigh: Besides Jive, what apps/software/tools can't you live without?

Clarissa: I really like Spotify because of the variety of lists they have, and when I was able to run (I'm recovering from some ankle injuries), I was addicted to Nike Running. But I also really need my Reminders app (from the iPhone), the Google Agenda tool, my Moleskine Planner and some post-its - you can't only trust your memory to get things done

Leigh: Do you have a favorite non-computer gadget?

Clarissa: I was going to say a digital watch with a timer feature, but then I realized my favorite non-computer gadget is actually my Moleskine 18-months planner. It's one of those special themed editions, with the whole Peanuts Gang, and it helps me get all my weeks organized.


Leigh: How do you stay organized? What's your favorite to-do list manager?

Clarissa: With reminders on my iPhone app, my planner (for personal appointments), and for professional tasks/ appointments, post-its, notes and lists on my notebook and sometimes, my memory.

Leigh: What you surround yourself with is important, what's your work space like?

Clarissa: My work space is kind of messy, because I always have tons of things in my mind - but if you ask me for something, I'll know the place of all my things. And I like to add some touches of fun to it - because life is already too serious.

Leigh: What do you listen to while you work?

Clarissa: It depends on my mood, but mostly to EDM (electronic dance music) and Foo Fighters (huge fan of these guys)!

Leigh: I've been obsessed with Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters for quite some time, too! So I'm right there with you, Clarissa.

Clarissa: I'm very proud to say that I've been to 2 of the 3 concerts Foo Fighters played in Sao Paulo (or Brazil), including their first solo concert that happened January 2015.

Leigh: What's your best time-saving trick?

Clarissa: Getting your priorities done before you open your email or your Jive inbox, otherwise, you'll be carried away with new tasks and problems.

Leigh: How do you balance work and life?

Clarissa: I try to set a time for leaving work - and try not to take it home with me. Besides, if I have a personal appointment, I try my best not to miss it or be late for it.

Clarissa: Between 5-7 hours are enough to make me feel rested.

Leigh: Are you more of an introvert, extrovert or ambivert?

Clarissa: I believe ambivert, because even though I talk a lot, I don't open myself to everyone.

Clarissa: My mom always says "in the end, everything will be alright. If it's not alright, then, it's not over yet." And it is true, it helps me control my anxiety to get everything done right away.

It was a true pleasure to interview Daniel Marotta, Community Manager at Penn Foster Education. Daniel caught my eye in the Jive Community because he's been a member since June of 2008 and he has quite a lot of connections. But, most importantly, he's got a great sense of humor which shines when he shares how he works in the correspondence below:

Leigh: Where do you work?

Daniel: I've been a Jive customer and community manager for 8+ years working across a half dozen industries. Currently, I work at Penn Foster Education. We are an online education provider headquartered out of Scranton, PA. We started out as a correspondence school helping coal miners receive on-the-job training. When the Internet came to be, we evolved our curriculum to take advantage of modern technologies. This year marks 125 years in the distance learning space.


Leigh: How would you describe your current job?

Daniel: I am the community manager here at Penn Foster. I execute on the overall strategy of our Student Community; which is to give our students a destination to meet their instructors and classmates, and provide them with resources to help them progress through their coursework. You can see how important a virtual campus can be to our students when compared to traditional brick and mortar institutions. I also dabble in our social media strategy.


Leigh: Are you familiar with the Jive [ARCHIVE] WorkTypes? If so, what was your WorkType?

Daniel: I am familiar with Jive WorkTypes. According to the quiz, I'm a Planner / Explorer. Is that accurate? Well...yes, yes it is.


Leigh: How do you think your WorkType plays into how you get work done in Jive?

Daniel: It's fairly dead-on in how I approach my work on Jive. Every request for a new space or how content is served up or organized goes through a vigorous planning process on my end. I want to make sure it's user-friendly and scale-able. From there, I look (or explore) for ways to optimize the experience.


Leigh: Did your team have a chance to take the WorkType Finder quiz? Have you all talked about your results?

Daniel: After we got back from JiveWorld, the whole team took the WorkType quiz. Our results were all over the place; which I think is a benefit. We all have our own role within the team and complement each other well.

Leigh: What was your favorite part of attending JiveWorld this year?

Daniel: My favorite part of JiveWorld last year was seeing Adam Sadowsky of Syyn Labs demonstrate his Rube Goldberg Machines and the collaboration with OK Go; not to mention actually seeing and hearing OK Go perform on stage. Very cool.

Leigh: So how do you use Jive at work (internal community, external community, etc.)?

Daniel: Penn Foster has both actually; an internal and external community. Our internal community is used to traffic marketing and creative requests. Collaboration is an important part of this process. Our external community, the Student Community, is how I describe it above; for students to meet and interact with their classmates and instructors, provide them the resources they need to be successful students, and give them a platform to form study groups and find study buddies.

Leigh: What's your computer situation... Do you use a Mac or PC (or something else)?

Daniel: I live two lives as far as my computer situation. My work life is on a PC. My personal life is on a Mac.

Leigh: Tell us what you use for your mobile device?

Daniel: My mobile device is an extension of my personal life. You'll see me with my iPhone or iPad

Leigh: Do you have a favorite editing tool?

Daniel: I'm the idea guy. So when it comes to being creative, I let the designers and producers lead the way.

Leigh: Who’s your developer hero?

Daniel: I can't say that I have a developer hero. What about the guys on HBO's Silicon Valley? Can Richard and his Pied Piper team be my developer heroes?

Leigh: I'm with you on this one!

Leigh: Pick one word that best describes how you work.

Daniel: Reckless! I'm kidding, it's actually the opposite; carefully.

Leigh: Besides Jive, what apps/software/tools can't you live without?

Daniel: There's no one tool I can't live without, but I do enjoy demo'ing mobile apps. No specific category or genre. I just like to see what's happening across mobile.

Leigh: Do you have a favorite non-computer gadget?

Daniel: My favorite non-computer gadget? my AppleTV considered non-computer? I don't know, this is a tough one. I do have a drone. I haven't mastered its flight but I'm practicing.


Leigh: How do you stay organized? What's your favorite to-do list manager?

Daniel: I use Wunderlist to stay organized. It's a great tool that shows a birds-eye view of personal to-do's and across a team so you know what your colleagues are working on.

Leigh: What you surround yourself with is important, what's your work space like?

Daniel: My workspace has a minimalist look; two monitors, wireless keyboard, mouse, and headset. The most important thing? My mini desk fan.

Leigh: What do you listen to while you work?

Daniel: Due to the openness of our work space, I listen to a lot of co-workers chomping on food and their personal calls. BUT, if you mean what music I listen to, then it's my iTunes playlists and Pandora; a little bit of everything.


Leigh: What's your best time-saving trick?

DanieI: have two friends that are doctors. They are absolutely the best when it comes to time management. Sometimes Doc (Emmett is his real name), will pick me up in his Delorean and we will go for a spin. When I'm in that car, it's like time stands still. My other doctor friend is kind of a space shot. I don't know if he's coming or going. But when we hang out, times seems to not matter.

Leigh: Everyone should have time-saving friends like this!

Leigh: How do you balance work and life?

Daniel: There's always work that needs to get done, right? But there's always a chance of burnout. So, I give myself specific "time to unplug" deadlines each day. Peppering in vacation days during long stretches between holidays also helps.

Leigh: What's your sleep routine like?

Daniel: My coffee addiction doesn't allow me to have sleep.

Leigh: Are you more of an introvert or an extrovert?

Daniel: You would think that since I am a community manager, I would be an extrovert. But in actuality, I would classify myself as an introvert. Sometime I just can't wait to spend quality time on my couch.

Leigh: What's the best advice you've ever received (and from whom)?

Daniel: "Don't eat any Chinese food today or you'll be very sick." -my fortune cookie

We're so happy to introduce you to Deborah de Freitas, Spredfast's internal community manager (among many other things). Within the last year Spredfast rolled out both an internal and external community. And even though these tasks have kept Deborah very busy, she graciously shared her workstyle with us below. I must say, I absolutely LOVE the how Deborah supplemented her comments with visuals - I wish I could take a peak into her personal gif library!

Leigh: Where do you work?

Deb: I work at Spredfast. We build a smart social platform and offer services that help our customers be more successful with every social network on any digital screen.

Leigh: How would you describe your current job?

Deb: I think of myself as a concierge. I share information, tools, and help employees do what they need more efficiently. My title is Employee Programs Manager and under that umbrella I manage our internal community, intranet and internal communications, oversee our travel program, and support internal events.  I jump into a lot of projects, but at the heart of all of them is helping our employees be successful.

Deb:  Yes.  I went through the navigator just before JiveWorld14.  In the big picture, I'm an Explorer.  When it gets down to details, I'm an Optimizer. (WorkTypes Descriptions)

Leigh: How do you think your WorkType plays into how you get work done in Jive?

Deb: As an explorer, I look for new ideas, new use cases, new ways to use Jive to communicate.  As an optimizer, I find ways to use Jive to improve existing processes and to ensure key content is updated and accurate.

Leigh: What was your favorite part of attending JiveWorld last year?

Deb: We were brand new to Jive, so for me it was just like drinking from the fire-hose.

Leigh: So how do you use Jive at work (internal community, external community, etc.)?

Deb: We have both an internal community that runs on Cloud and an externally hosted closed customer community.

I manage the internal community which we call Sharefast. Shout out to my co-worker Samantha Lopez, who manages the Spredfast Customer Community.

In the internal community we have several use cases - some of the primary ones we focused on at launch this year were:

  • Replacing our intranet (which was on Google sites)
  • Replacing a WordPress internal product blog
  • Creating a central repository of updated responses for RFP questions
  • Centralizing communication of sales wins and customer launches
  • Circulating HR & Facilities announcements - seriously our Lunch Menu is the most read piece of content as it changes weekly and people check it daily.

Leigh: What's your computer situation... Do you use a Mac or PC (or something else)?

Deb: We use Mac primarily. Every employee gets a brand new MacBook on day one (Shiny!) and I will defend my 27" Thunderbolt display with whatever is at hand - so watch out because I'm sure scissors can be stabby and I'll definitely launch a binder clip in your general direction. I think there are a few PCs in QA or dev, but even our IT guy used to work for Apple so it's mostly Mac all the time around here. (Fun fact, I used to work for Dell, but I feel no guilt for my unabashed Apple love)

Deb: You'll be shocked when I say Apple iPhone right?  I have the 6.

Deb: Flexibility.

Leigh: Besides Jive, what apps/software/tools can't you live without?

Deb: I'm an app junkie, so there are a lot of things I use, but a few of my favorites are:

  • Evernote - I put all kinds of things there for reference - recipes, articles I might want to share, brainstorming notes and more.
  • Facebook messenger - I like being able to send a message to someone without the intrusion of a text - they can reply when they want.  I have this looooong running message thread between two mutual friends who live in a different city.  We named the thread "Tea for 3" and we check-in during the day when we have time.  You have no idea (well maybe some idea after reading this) how excited I was when they added gifs to messenger!
  • CARROT - they have several apps and I love them all.  Their weather app is hilarious and really accurate too.  The alarm is one of the few that gets me up and makes me laugh. I've just never been a morning person.  (Night Owls Unite!)  and their ToDo app rewards you for getting things done (although I sometimes use other apps or old fashioned lists to plan things out.)
  • Google Maps - I create custom maps when I travel and share them with anyone I'm traveling with.  (Fun fact, I've been on every continent except Antarctica)  I love traveling and have taken at least a year sabbatical between every major job change - basically I work to save up money and then quit when I am ready for a change and travel for a while and then come home and decide what to do next.  In between those big travel years - which is usually solo travel - I'm the planner for group travel with my friends and try to go somewhere - even if it's a road trip every few months.

Leigh: Do you have a favorite non-computer gadget?

Deb: Hmm... this is tough - all my favorite things like my kindle or my fitbit are technically computers. My husband would probably name something fancy in the kitchen, but honestly he's the chef not me.  I'm gonna say my Philips Sonicare Diamond Clean black toothbrush. I really love it and it makes my smile brighter.


Leigh: How do you stay organized? What's your favorite to-do list manager?

Deb: I write a lot of lists. I learn and remember best when I write things down so I always have some sort of notebook with me. I usually write notes and ideas in meetings and I write out lists of action items daily and revise my master list at least weekly and then add the most important or timed things to my google/work calendar or to my to do app (see above). I can be kind of a productivity geek so I've tried just about every to-do app out there, but none of them are perfect for me so I keep going back to paper. I keep folders for projects and using the GTD style try to keep the next action on my list.  Honestly this makes me sound super organized, but my priorities change constantly so I usually feel a bit chaotic. 

I find that what works best for me is that every night before I leave work, I just figure out what the most important thing to do the next day is and limit myself to three things max on the plan for the day. (read about the 1-3-5 rule)  Less if I have more than 4 hours of meetings. In the morning I make sure nothing has happened to change that plan and then start working on those items first. I get a lot more done than just those things throughout the day usually and do try to follow the rule of if it takes less than 2 minutes just do it instead of adding it to a list or calendar. (That's where Carrot can get fun - getting credit for all those little things you do.) If I don't start like that my whole day becomes responding to emails and drop-bys.

Leigh: What you surround yourself with is important, what's your work space like?

Deb: Within arms reach is always water, some sort of toy, a plant, my phone, a notebook, and folders for active projects. I try to keep my desk fairly clean so I can spread out projects and not lose my keyboard. I keep my computer on a stand and use the notebook screen for Slack and email and then use the large display for whatever I'm working on. I use Chrome and have multiple profiles set up for my different roles so I can change between "People" and it keeps all the logins for that profile in one place.

Leigh: What do you listen to while you work?

Deb: Usually I just listen to the hum of my co-workers and music from our kitchen/lounge. Sometimes I'll put the headphones on and start a Pandora station. I've tested out Focus at Will and found it helpful as there are a lot of distractions in our open plan office, but usually the general hum is energizing. I love music so it can be more distracting for me than office noise.  Plus, I'll spend way too much time trying for the perfect playlist.


Leigh: What's your best time-saving trick?

Deb: Reminding myself that perfect is the enemy of good. Just get it done, get it out there and improve upon it. Spending time in startups has taught me that quick iterations trump long planning and execution in dynamic environments.


Leigh: How do you balance work and life?

Deb: We have a cultural value at Spredfast called "Freesponsibility" - basically the marriage of freedom and responsibility. There is a high level of trust given that you will get your work done and be responsible for your commitments to the company and in return we are given the freedom to do it our way. So I may spend the morning working from home but getting up early to be on UK time for travel planning, and then have a lunch appointment out, then work in the office or from a coffee shop for a few hours before heading home.  I may come in at  7 (not typical - see the morning person note) and work until 3:30 and head out early.  I may come in at 10am and work until 7pm (more typical for me). But I know as long as I make critical meetings and meet the goals I've been given I can work around what I need to do personally. 

I also balance at a high level by setting goals for myself each year for the people I want to spend more time with, the things I want to have accomplished when the year is done, and the places I want to go. I keep those goals in mind each week and if I haven't seen someone on my list in a few weeks, I make it a priority to spend time with them. If I haven't had a trip in a few months, I start planning my next one. And if I haven't made progress on one of my goals, I block out some time to get some next steps done.

Leigh: What's your sleep routine like?

Deb: Well, left to my own devices I would stay up into the wee hours and sleep until noon - that's what I do on vacation. But during an average work week, I try to get off the computer (and phone) by around 10/11 to start settling down. I try to be in bed by 11 and reading so ideally will be asleep by midnight, but it doesn't always work like that - live music shows, watching that next episode on Netflix, or really engaging books often keep me up past my bedtime. I wake up between 6am-8am most mornings during the week. (Sleeping later if I'm working from home or don't need to be in the office until 10 I sleep as late as possible on the weekends.)

Leigh: Are you more of an introvert or an extrovert?

Deb: I'm a social introvert, an expressive introvert. I'm not shy and have no fear of public speaking or crowds, but they do drain me so I need time to recharge. If I get overwhelmed I find a corner and stare at my phone until I can leave. I have found that I must have at least 1 day a week where I don't have to leave the house or deal with people much to function at my peak. That down day, which usually involves a lot of reading, swimming, Netflix, and cats, gives me enough of a recharge to last the week.


Leigh: What's the best advice you've ever received (and from whom)?

Deb:  I love quotes and have a few that have become mantras to live by - here are 3 of my favorites.

Libby Taylor and I recently had the good fortune to catch up with the fast moving Kate Bellard, the enterprise community manager at Cameron. She's been a community member for the last two years and we asked her to share her experiences with us today.

Leigh Pankonien: Let's get started with an easy question, where do you work?

Kate Bellard: I work at Cameron. We design, manufacture, and service equipment used worldwide in the oil, gas, and process industries. You can check it out at:

LP: How would you describe your current job?

Kate: I'm the Enterprise Community Manager for our internal community, Linx. Like many Community Managers, I wear multiple hats - Strategist, Community Builder/Manager, Project Manager, and Internal Communications/Brand Ambassador. It's a dynamic, challenging role that allows me to meet and work with all levels of employees and be involved in all facets of our business.

LP: Are you familiar with the Jive WorkTypes? If so, what was your WorkType?

Kate: I'm an Energizer and a Connector.


Using her two WorkTypes, Kate can meet new people in impossible ways.

LP: How do you think your WorkType plays into how you get work done in Jive?

Kate: I thrive when I'm on-the-go: meeting with employees, running from meeting to meeting, wearing my strategist hat. I really enjoy seeing employees have that "ah-ha" moment when their wheels start turning on how they could potentially transform their business processes and incorporate social business into their daily job. The opportunity to connect with new people and motivate them to do something different really excites me.

LP: So how do you use Jive at work (internal community, external community, etc.)?

Kate: We are using Jive 6.0.3 as our internal communication and collaboration platform. With Linx, employees can search for answers to their questions, connect with SMEs, keep up with the latest Corporate, Divisional, or Departmental news, share best practices and ideas, and engage with leadership. Currently, our intranet is hosted on SharePoint 2013. Almost all company news now resides in Linx, but it's featured on our SharePoint homepage. Essentially, SharePoint has become the front door to Linx and employees can choose to keep their content in a SharePoint teamsite or Linx group/space - they decide which platform best suites their needs. Long term, it's one of my goals to move our intranet to Jive.

LP: What's your computer situation... Do you use a Mac or PC (or something else)?

Kate: It's complicated. The administration of my company PC recently changed to a system controlled desktop (rather than a Kate-controlled desktop). It's like this:

If any of you have a controlled desktop, I'd be interested in learning how you work with your IT department to test and deploy Jive downloads. What do you say, The specified item was not found. and [ARCHIVE] Jive External Communities?

LP: What do you use for your mobile device?

Kate: iPhone 5s - I had to get a new phone after returning home from JiveWorld13 because my purse was stolen in Vegas!

LP: Pick one word that best describes how you work.

Kate: Strategically. I think big picture; I'm one of those people who needs to remind themselves to live in the moment and not in the future. In terms of getting work done, I identify a handful of strategic initiatives for the year and map out smaller action items to help me achieve those goals. For example, this year I'm focusing on:

    • Use cases. Identifying and developing wide and deep use cases with the help of Aurea Professional Services. It will be a much easier intranet transition from SharePoint to Jive if the content and places already reside in our community.
    • A knowledge sharing case study. A group of students from Rice University are evaluating Cameron's current and prior attempts at developing a knowledge sharing platform for the company and making a recommendation for a process that will succeed. Recommendations could include tweaks to the Jive platform (enhancing search and navigation and integrating with other document management systems), incentivizing employees to share knowledge by tying activity to performance evaluations, rebranding our community with a second awareness campaign, etc.
    • Jive 8 upgrade. I'm eager to move to Jive 8-n. Some of the features that I'm most excited about are the News stream, ability to auto-subscribe employees to custom streams, place categorization, place pages, and promoted content. Oh, and an improved mobile experience for our employees!
    • Executive Participation. I'm working on a creating an executive participation plan to educate and train our executives on the small and big ways they can participate in the community. I think it's important that they lead by example - most employees see the value of improved collaboration and engagement, but some have been hesitant to take time away from their daily job to participate. If our executives are not only contributing, but also recognizing and rewarding employees who are active in the community, it will help eliminate any concerns about community participation and knowledge sharing in the organization.

LP: Besides Jive, what apps/software/tools can't you live without?

Kate: I love my iPad and Apple TV.

LP: How do you stay organized? What's your favorite to-do list manager?

Kate: In order to stay organized, I need to be focused and energized. I turn to exercise to help me remain alert, energized, and in good spirits. I'm a regular at barre pilates and rhythm based spin classes.


Also, I'm pretty old-school when it comes to my to-do list. It's a great feeling to be able to scratch something off a list, so I keep everything written down and listed in my notebook. At the start of each week, I review my notes from the previous week and start a new, prioritized list of action items.

LP: What you surround yourself with is important, what's your work space like?

Kate: I can't sit still at my desk for too long and I'm often out conducting training at some of our locations around the world. So I'm surrounded with a bunch of swag - either promotional materials from marketing campaigns and fun little trinkets that I've picked up. Below are some pictures from my world travels in 2013.

LP: What do you listen to while you work?

Kate: The beat of office chatter, foot traffic, and conference calls. I like to be immersed into the chaos that surrounds me and I feel a little too removed from my work environment if I have headphones on.

LP: What's your best time-saving trick?

Kate: Prioritization! Set realistic, achievable, and measurable goals. Work SMART.

LP: How do you balance work and life?

Kate: This is always an interesting question to me. For me, going to work, setting goals, and having a sense of accomplishment have become such an integral part of my life that I don't really view my work life separate from my personal life. It's never one versus the's more of blend. Working is one of the things that brings joy and excitement in my life. With that being said, I'm not working 24/7 and think it's important to turn things off and have some personal time to re-energize - that's where working out and social activities on the weekends come in. Mobile capabilities make it pretty easy to monitor things while still remaining unplugged.

LP: What's your sleep routine like?

Kate: I typically get 7-9 hours of sleep each night.

LP: Are you more of an introvert or an extrovert?

Kate: I'd describe myself as an introverted extrovert. I'm more of an introvert on a personal level...I tend to observe the environment and people in social settings before fully jumping in. BUT in a work environment, as I've stated above, I really enjoy meeting and working with people and helping them strategically use Jive to solve business challenges. I'd much rather be on-the-go than sitting behind a desk. I think I perform better when I'm in roles or situations that put me a little out of my comfort zone. It forces me to be more focused.

LP: Finally, what's the best advice you've ever received (and from whom)?

Kate: The oil and gas industry is facing some challenging times. Our executives are encouraging all employees to "be engaged, flexible, and focused." I think it's important to carry this mindset at all times, not just in the challenging times. When I was approached about the Community Manager role, I was working in HR. I had no idea what a Community Manager did, nor had I seen myself working in any other realm besides HR, but I was open to the change and optimistic about a new opportunity. And now I can't imagine doing anything else! Life can be unpredictable but if you remain engaged, flexible, and focused, anything is possible.

How I Work - Patty McEnaney.jpgLeigh: Where do you work?

Patty: I work at Envestnet Asset Management, headquartered in Chicago, with offices across the U.S. and one in India. Envestnet is one of the largest providers of wealth management solutions to independent financial advisors. The firm has an entrepreneurial spirit and a can-do attitude, which really appeals to me.

Leigh: How would you describe your current job?

Patty: My title is Director of Knowledge Management & Social Strategy. My job focuses on organizing content, team workflows/documents and processes to build solutions for enterprise social collaboration. Our goal is to improve knowledge transfer, communication and collaboration.

Leigh: Are you familiar with the Jive WorkTypes? If so, what was your WorkType?

Patty: I'm an Explorer/Planner, which I learned was the predominant WorkType among Community Managers attending JW2014. I laughed out loud when I read the descriptors for my WorkType. It's so "me." At the next JiveWorld, I want to be in a room with other Explorers/Planners. We would get a LOT done!

Leigh: How do you think your [ARCHIVE] WorkType plays into how you get work done in Jive?

Patty: Seeing connections between unrelated ideas, disparate concepts and different "systems" helps me identify ways to organize information and build relationships. This WorkType is key to building new things and creating new connections, which is what I love about my job.

Leigh: So how do you use Jive at work (internal community, external community, etc.)?

Patty: We launched an internal community in August 2014 for knowledge management, collaboration and communication. In December, we launched a Water Cooler site, EnvestnetConnect, to promote greater connectedness across offices and as a way to preserve our culture as we grow.

Leigh: What's your computer situation... Do you use a Mac or PC (or something else)?

Patty: I use a PC at work. At home, I work with an iPad, and a Dell laptop. 

Leigh: Tell us what you use for your mobile device?

Patty: iPhone 5S


Leigh: Pick one word that best describes how you work.

Patty: Focused.

Leigh: Besides Jive, what apps/software/tools can't you live without?

Patty: Twitter, NetFlix, iBooks, TED

Leigh: Do you have a favorite non-computer gadget?

Patty: My iPad holder, which I have connected to the handles of my road bike so I can "ride" on my trainer and watch "Call the Midwife."

Leigh: How do you stay organized?

Patty: My mother taught me that "order in the house is order in the mind." I've applied that to work and home. One of my biggest compliments is from a friend who told me that it looks as if no one lives in my house! It's peaceful and serene.

Leigh: What you surround yourself with is important, what's your work space like?

Patty: I surround myself with Help documents for users, Jive Software announcements, and good articles about transformative change, like this one. Those inspire me to focus on the needs of our users and keeps the collaborative, positive spirit of "Working Out Loud" top of mind. I also have five cube mates (we're in a row of six) who are supporters of HIVE and provide useful feedback and encouragement. Being around them lifts me up.

Leigh: What do you listen to while you work?

Patty: I listen to the thrum of my colleagues on the phone serving our clients. That provides a wonderful backdrop to my thoughts and is inspiring as well.


Leigh: What's your best time-saving trick?

Patty: Using Amazon to send pre-made care packages to my son. He's a freshman at University of Wisconsin-Madison.


Leigh: How do you balance work and life?

Patty: I'm very organized, both at work and at home. And, I think putting yourself in new places helps open the mind to new thoughts and ideas. My husband and I went on a bike trip in California wine country in October, 2014 and a change of scenery helps to refresh one's perspective.

Leigh: What's your sleep routine like?

Patty: I love sleep and do it as much as I can.

Leigh: Are you more of an introvert or an extrovert?

Patty: I am an EXTROVERT, in all caps. The specified item was not found. was a great way for me to connect with so many people, but I imagine it would be difficult to be an introvert at JW!

Leigh: What's the best advice you've ever received (and from whom)?

Patty: "Only connect." This comes from one of my favorite books, Howards End, by E.M. Forster and has resonated with me in the world of work and in my personal life. It's one of the reasons I met the delightful Libby Taylor and how I've met so many wonderful Jive employees and community members. I've learned so much from being a part of this community and I am grateful.

There were so many excellent submissions for the 2014 Jive Awards that we wanted to shout from the rooftops, but we decided to do one better and share these customer stories in our community. The first customer we want to highlight is Pearson, who took home the 2014 Work Better Together Jive Award. What follows profiles Pearson's journey through transformation when their new CEO, John Fallon, took over the company's leadership. Shout out to Kim England and Dina Vekaria-Patel for submitting this excellent awards submission!


Collaborative Leadership: How the New Workstyle Is Transforming How Leaders Lead


The tried and true top-down leadership model seems to be evolving much like the workstyles of the average employee. No longer can executives write up an email, click send to the company, and expect change to happen. Employees want to feel engaged in company strategy. They want to have a voice and take an active part in the destiny of their company. At the same time, leaders know things move fast and staying on top of the pulse of company morale and employee productivity gets tougher. Executives are also very aware of the increased demand by employees for transparency.


Creating an open dialogue

What typically happens when a new CEO takes over the reins? He or she begins the process of putting his or her leadership in place and the effects slowly trickle down throughout the company. Transformation is often slow, there is little to no transparency, and new initiatives that hold promise can become muddled because not everyone understands the big picture or how they fit in.


When John Fallon, CEO of Pearson, was handed the baton from former CEO, Marjorie Scardino, at the end of 2012, he wanted to create a dialogue with employees to talk about how he could best lead the company into the future. He began by embracing the company’s Jive employee collaboration solution, known as Neo.

Fallon’s vision for Pearson included a company-wide transformation called the Global Education Strategy (GES) to strengthen the company’s position as the world's largest education company. The GES represented the most significant restructure the company had undergone in its 150-year history.

It began with a series of Neo blog posts from Fallon and other executives. From this, company leadership gathered feedback, collected bottom-up content and questions in a collaborative manner, and monitored real-time data about how their messages were being received. The GES space launched on May 23, 2013 and generated a huge amount of interest—40,000 sessions in one day—causing a load issue within the community environment.


Demonstrating transparent leadership

Fallon says that using the company’s employee collaboration solution was not only an efficient and effective way to communicate about the company restructuring but that it also demonstrated transparency.

“Our strategy to use Neo to communicate was to change our culture to one where our leadership is open, transparent. Our next steps are to continue working with the executives and to help the next level down take a similar approach.”

Comments from employees about this approach are overwhelmingly positive:

“I feel valued by the amount of inclusion that is taking place with the new strategies. It's important to know how we are affected in our current positions.”
“The GES space on Neo is a great way to find everything that gets lost sometimes in waves of very long emails.”
“GES space on Neo and org charts-- both helped me to see how everything is going to fit together.”

Continuing collaborative leadership

Each member of Pearson’s executive team blogs regularly. Some even add selfies and address topics that are not always connected directly to the day-to-day job of leading the organization. They ask questions, create debate and invite opinion. Executives also want their messages to feature in the trending content around Neo. And since the introduction of Impact Metrics with the upgrade to Jive 7, they even engage in some healthy competition over who is having the biggest impact.


What could have been executed in a traditional top-down manner, GES turned into an opportunity for the whole company to collaborate around a major reorganization. Pearson desired to change their culture to one where their leaders are open, transparent and available and they are well on their way to making this so!

We can't wait to see how they take the next step and work with the executives on the next level down to continue this transformation. We know it will be a success and we're proud of how the Pearson team is working better together in Neo.


When flipping through my phone's photo gallery it's easy to tell what time of year it is: Christmas trees, fireworks, football season, and JiveWorld photos! It's obviously quite a memorable occasion. I'm so excited to be attending my 3rd JiveWorld Archives this year, and hopefully I can share a sneak peak into what to expect this year to get you amped/prepared for this party...err...conference.

1) Use the JiveWorld14 Mobile App to plan our your day

There are so many unique tracks, sessions, meet-ups, social events, etc, that you really need to make sure you're at the right place at the right time.


2) Meet up with your colleagues and your favorite Jive Community members

The Welcome Happy Hour Reception on Tuesday from 5p-7p provides an excellent opportunity to meet the people you've developed a relationship with online. But pace yourself, there are lots of Happy Hour networking events through out JiveWorld...


3) You DO NOT want to miss the Mainstage keynotes and entertainment

It would be like missing a Game of Thrones Finale. This is the perfect way to start your days at JiveWorld. You'll leave with tons of ideas to take back to your company, inspired by the results your colleagues like Mike Laffin, Todd Moran and Tony McGivern have found with their instances, and fueled by the words and performances of Azure Antoinette, Adam Sadowsky and OK Go.


Did I mention OK Go? They do magical things like this.

JiveWorld Yoga and Running clubs meet at 6:15am (this should be an easy wake up call for those that are coming from the east). If you're running, this may be the only time you see natural light in 4 days. Enjoy it!


Also, this could be a good time to get some face time with Ryan Rutan - this guy doesn't need sleep!


5) Contribute to the online conversation

Participate in the JiveWorld14 Game Series and you could win an iPad Mini! But the prize is not the main incentive IMO. The gamification encourages you to experience all the great things that JiveWorld has to offer and to share that experience across social media and the app. So download the app, login and start playing!

Also, swing by the Social Command Center to pull us away from our computers. We'll need some human interaction.


6) Pick the right track for you, but don't be afraid to branch out

Depending on how well-versed you are with Jive there's a track that's most suited to your needs. Make sure to attend the sessions that are the most appropriate to your needs, but I'd also encourage you to take in some sessions that are a bit out of your comfort zone or level. It's a great measure of growth if during JiveWorld14 you attend mostly "New to Jive Sessions" and then during JiveWorld15 you attend mostly "Advanced Community Management Sessions".


7) Develop it!

If you're a developer, the sessions and activities are more plentiful for you this year. Wim Stoop gives you a sneak peak (Develop Better Together at JiveWorld14) and Ryan Rutan breaks down the Developer Conference in full (JiveWorld14 Developer Conference : We're Brewing Up Something Awesome!)

8) You have to take time to re-charge your battery

I would recommend you take full advantage of your stay in the Cosmopolitan, as it's my favorite hotel in Vegas. Spend some down time in your crazy posh Cosmopolitan room, or head to Holstein's for a milkshake that will blow your mind. #poprocks


9) Get your technical questions answered

I know you have at least one question about the Jive platform or its integration with other platforms. The Genius Bar is stocked with smarty pants that are there to help you. The Jive Solution Showcase and Partner Expo Hall are also great places to learn about companies that can help you implement your social business solution.

Dance it out with Jivers and all of your new friends - I promise you a good time. Even if all you want to do is get in your sweat pants and eat a full pepperoni from Secret Pizza, down a shot of espresso, man up and get yourself to the Final Night Party!

It's also a great time to stop and celebrate the awesome internal and external community managers, that are running the show across a variety of social platforms. The importance of and the number of community managers out there is growing and their skills are unique. They have to balance meeting their goals (growth, engagement, reach, ROI, closed tickets, etc) while making sure the story and personality shines through in content....and much, much more. It's imperative to stay on top of the evolving social media landscape, so here are some of the most fascinating changes recently for some of the more popular social media platforms:




  • It's all about the visual. Facebook's new layout affected the optimal photo sizing you're used to creating. Here's a new cheat sheet.
  • As Facebook is public (and because they can) brands are having to pay more and more in order for their content to be seen by even a portion of their community. Many users and brands are not happy with their new algorithm.
    "Only 43% of marketers feel like their Facebook efforts are working." - Social Media Examiner
  • On the other hand, Facebook Audience Insights have grown dramatically, and marketers are really able to fine tune their ad targeting, especially through Facebook's Power Editor Tool. I've seen great success using the Power Editor to create Dark Posts.



  • Twitter rolled out some interesting changes that make your profile more similar to Facebook: new header image, pinning a tweet to the top of your feed, and adding more info to your profile page. So now I can pin my Spurs tweet to the top of my page and share my UT pride in my header image. #GoSpursGo #Hookem

  • LinkedIn has recently rolled out Showcase Pages, removing the Product and Services tab on your Company Page. This allows people to follow certain initiatives, products or services of each company and these pages act as an extension of your Company Page. Though, it was a bummer to lose all of those product/service recommendations! I think the jury is still out on the success or effectiveness of Showcase Pages.
  • LinkedIn awards their Premium users a profile that looks very similar to Facebook's (do you see a trend here?) in order to help them stand out in searches and to allow them a more personal feel. As I'm not a Premium member, I'm very jealous of this new profile - but it will roll out to non-Premium members soon. I can't wait! See how awesome Deirdre Walsh's profile page looks?

  • Google+ has grown in importance in my eyes mainly because of the SEO value. In fact, I'm shifting time away from Facebook to Google+ because of Facebook's new algorithm.
  • +Post ads is a new program launched that allows brand pages with more than 1,000 followers to promote their Google+ content posts via Google's AdSense program. Learn more. I'm excited to try this program out!


Our awesome, new Senior Community Manager, Libby Taylor, elaborates on Online Communities:

More and more businesses and organizations are establishing online social collaboration communities for their customers, partners and employees. While these kinds of forums have been around for years, some new trends are emerging:

  • Moving to the cloud. With easier upgrades and the latest sets of features, the cloud has it all. Rather than hosting communities themselves, more companies are moving to cloud-based technologies.
  • Executive bloggers. Gone are the days when executives communicate only through a team of spokes-people creating press releases. Executive blogging is on the rise and customers and employees are connecting with them real-time.
  • Peer-to-peer support. Getting answers to questions is happening more than ever within online communities and can sometimes be faster and easier than getting support from the companies themselves.

A lot of people are familiar with Reddit's "Ask Me Anything" forums, where some of the world's most fascinating people will take on any question from passionate fans.  While we at Jive might not be able to land Joan Jett or President Obama (yet), our community members have integrated the AMA concept into the Jive platform to showcase their amazing executives.  This type of outreach connects corporate leaders with their employees, and creates top notch content to showcase broad thinking throughout the entire company.


So, who made this possible?  Our community members, of course!  After David F. Carr InformationWeek asked for The specified item was not found., four of Jive's most active thought leaders (Tracy Maurer, Nikki Bussard, Jem Janik) chimed in to discuss best practices.  Not only that, but Jacqui Chan of Deutsche Bank took it a step further and composed A Guide to organise an AMA on Jive so that everyone can maximize their Jive experience.  Her "critical success factors" outlined:
