We all know that change is difficult, disruptive, uncomfortable... so getting the audience or market ready for change is a critically important component. 

 

At SAP, we're on the way to adopting the Jive 5 platform for much of our 8-year-old, 2+ million member community, the SAP Community Network (SCN).  One entire workstream is dedicated to "winning hearts and minds," where we are communicating in advance that change is coming, tieing the change to expressed wants / needs / desires of our members, showing progress in areas like taxonomy alignment or wireframes or UI skin designs.  We are sharing with key influencers in the community both internally and externally.  We are using multiple channels to communicate, from blogs and other discussions and posts in our community itself, to twitter / facebook / linked in, to in-person events, digital newsletters and emails, and somewhat "traditional" publications like online magazines.  We are doing face-to-face user testing (23 hours of in-depth recorded interviews).  We are selectively "leaking" new feature info and gorgeous designs - especially to vocal, influential stakeholders.  We are helping moderators and super-users get ready with a series of feature tours and discussions so they will become pseudo-experts on the new system even before it goes live.  And we are building and sharing the excitement and positive energy as we approach launch at the end of this year. 

 

This week the "SAP Info" online magazine published a story that will reach tens-of-thousands of our target audience. I share it because it has links to many of the public-facing items we've published to date.  (Others are audience-specific, or internal...) 

 

As much as we focus on the tools, technologies, features, and functionality of social business, social networking, and communities, I encourage you to remember to put people at the forefront of your change efforts and -- to gain acceptance, adoption, and enthusiasm on the way to success --  dedicate special attention to winning their hearts and minds.
