Deep Dive: SharePoint Integrations

Version 5

    General

Jive is happy to announce the release of an updated SharePoint Online & Office 365 connector, as well as a new SharePoint 2013 v4 connector which is a massive enhancement to the longstanding SharePoint 2010/2013 on-prem connector. Here is a little background:

    • Jive for SharePoint 2010/2013. This is the legacy SharePoint on-prem connector that has been around for the past 2 years. It will eventually be replaced by the new SharePoint 2013 v4 connector subject to a future EOL plan
    • Jive for SharePoint Online & Office 365. This is the SharePoint online connector and it constitutes of both SharePoint storage & portal side, as well as the office 365 productivity suite integration
    • Jive for SharePoint 2013 v4. This is the new and long awaited SharePoint on-prem connector that will eventually replace the SharePoint 2010/2013 connector

    What's New?

    Jive for SharePoint Online

Jive for SharePoint Online is upgraded with better performance and stability fixes to the backend cloud service that powers the sync between a Jive instance and SharePoint Online.Beyond infrastructural improvements, Jive for SharePoint Online is getting 3 new Webparts that can optionally be installed on connected sites. Jive Webparts for SharePoint allow to bring the social context of Jive into SharePoint allowing users to view feed activity, people information and Jive content that is related to the connected Jive place.

    Content Webpart

The content Webpart creates a view of all content items stored in the connected Jive place, including Documents, Blog posts Discussions and Polls.SharePoint users can click on any content item and view the discussion thread associated with it, as well as interact with it - Liking or posting comments with a full Jive Rich Text Editor. When in the context of a given content item - SharePoint users can also click to navigate to the Jive content page for any further actions.

    Activity Webpart

The Activity Webpart is a view of all activity occurring in the connected Jive place including all content types and social actions. It resembles the activity page that is typically the default page of a Jive place. As with the Content Webpart - the items of the Activity Webpart can be viewed in detail, allowing to post comments and apply social actions, as well as navigate to the full page of the associated item.

    People Webpart

The People Webpart allows SharePoint users to browse the list of users that are active in the connected Jive place. Info cards are provided for either members of the Jive place, or followers, and SharePoint users can navigate to the full profile page of the user in Jive.

    Jive for SharePoint 2013 v4

Jive for SharePoint 2013 v4 is the new integration intended for on-prem SharePoint users, that replaces the previous SharePoint 2010/2013. At its core functionality, the integration allows to connect a Jive place to a SharePoint site for storing and syncing files and documents between the two systems.

    Full hierarchy folder sync
Once connected, any file uploaded to Jive, will be stored in a designated "Jive Documents" Document Library in SharePoint. The integration is bidirectional in the sense that any files uploaded directly to the SharePoint Document Library will also be synced back toJive effectively creating a File object that can have all the Jive social collaboration actions such as Like, follow, comment etc.Unlike the previous integration, SharePoint users get direct access to the Document Library in SharePoint, where they can upload files and create custom views. The new integration also supports folder hierarchy sync, meaning that SharePoint users can create sub folders under the "Jive Documents" library and have all uploaded files sync to Jive as well. This allows to easily migrate content from local/network storage or other SharePoint sites in the Jive-synced location.

    Office Web Apps

Another powerful feature that has not been available in the past is the ability to view and edit Office documents in-browser. This capability is supported by the Office Web Apps components, provided by Microsoft. Once installed on the SharePoint 2013 server - it allows to generate a preview of Office Web Apps in Jive, and to navigate to a document in a new tab where it can be edited and also co-authored by concurrent users (pending capabilities of the Microsoft Office Web Apps). This new capability extends an "Office 365-like" experience to customers who may have an on-prem requirement, or even working in an air-gapped environment.

    Simplified Deployment & Administration

Jive for SharePoint 2013 v4 comes with a simplified administration UI and up-to-date deployment requirements.Rather than configuring multiple connections in the Jive admin console, all configuration is applied in one screen in the Add-on section. In addition, apart from configuring additional components on the SharePoint server such as WSP and power shell scripts, the new architecture relies on the standard Claims based authentication from Microsoft for configuring and controlling trust and access, and the Jive connector service for all other configuration options.
