We all know that Jive is a great platform for blogging. It's important to know some tips and tricks to creating a great blog as well as the key points for maximizing Search Engine Optimization (SEO) as well. In order to ensure some standards around blogs (specifically for the Jive Community), I've developed this hopefully helpful blog template.
This template is good for thought leadership blogs or best practice blogs. If you are passionate about blogging and would prefer to free-form it, by all means, go for it! I simply hope to provide some assistance for bloggers who might have trouble knowing where to start. Also see: 5 Tips for Successful Blog Posts
Particularly related to SEO, before you begin to write you'll want to have a clear idea of what your blog is about and select one or two keywords or phrases that are most relevant to the blog topic. By doing this you'll help search engines potentially match your blog with search terms folks are looking for. If you are blogging about a popular topic, you might consider searching (on Google or your favorite search engine) to see the type of search results that rank well. Tips related to blog metadata and title are included below.
BLOG TITLE:Title is very important to SEO, even for Jive Community blogs. Be sure to use the top SEO keyword for the subject matter in your blog title. Then answer the question: What will readers get from the blog? Your title should clearly communicate to readers why they should read the blog and what they will get from it. Now do this in ten words or less. Less is better. Enter 10 words or less: ___
- This text will become the title of the search result
- Most search engines will only display the first < 70 characters, including spaces, of the title
BLOG BODY This body of copy should contain the keyword(s) you targeted in the Title and Intro without being spammy. Keyword density is the number of times your keyword appears in the blog post in comparison to all the words in the post. Optimally, the keyword density should be around 3 %.
INTRO TO THE BLOG:
Again, important for SEO. Jive's product is smart, it uses the first paragraph of your blog for the SEO meta description. Use this knowledge wisely. Summarize what the blog is about and the value for the reader in the first two sentences of the blog. This is a great opportunity to expand on the title. Aim for 2-3 sentences : ____________________________________________...
- Jive software will extract the first 150 characters, including spaces, to create the meta description
- This description can appear in search results, but doesn't always
TELL A STORY (if you have one):
At this point you can take a paragraph to tell a little story. Did you meet with a customer recently who said something interesting and pertinent to the topic? Do you have a personal experience with the topic that you would like to share?
5-6 sentences: _____________________________________________________________...
DELIVER THE VALUE:
By this point, you'll want to start diving into the meat of your blog. Remember the value you promised to deliver in the title and the intro? Get to it here. Deliver the value you promised in either list or bullet point format. People find it easier to read. If you are not a fan of either, it's okay to continue a narrative but separate each point you make in its own paragraph.
3-5 short paragraphs (or user a list or bullet point format): __________________________...
WRAP IT UP:
Always include a conclusion of some kind along with a call to action for the reader. Answer the question, why is this information good to know? How does this information help the reader? What would you like their next step to be and how can they learn more about it?
3-5 sentences ____________________________________________________________...
Adding tags to your blog post is very important for Jive search and SEO. The tags populate what appears in the keyword meta tag. Try to use a minimum of 2 relevant tags, including the keywords or phrases you blog post is about. Try not to use more than 7 keywords.
For example, relevant tags for this blog would be: blog content, blog design, blog template, seo. Tags are not case-sensitive.
