Parameter Cheat Sheet

Version 1

Here's a table listing parameters used on on the Jive platform (4.x) along with what they do. Via Google Webmaster Tools, you can suggest to Google how to treat these parameters in order to avoid those that create additional versions of the same URL.

Per Google: "If your site uses URL parameters, some of the parameters may be unnecessary for page navigation. Asking Google to ignore these parameters can reduce duplicate content in Google's index and make the site more crawlable." See the Google Help Article on Parameter Handling.

Tip: Common and problematic parameters that should be ignored should be repressed via the robots.txt: disallow the parameter and/or the navigational path they appear at.

    Testing

Here's some guidance on what action to select:

    1. Is this parameter required for navigation, except for sorting or filtering the view of the content?
      • Yes: Don't Ignore
      • This parameter sorts or filters the results: Ignore (i.e. all content is displayed by default)
      • No: See next questions
    2. Does this parameter retrieve unique content? (i.e. Content only visible when parameter employed)
      • Yes: Don't Ignore
      • Yes, but only when a specific value is used: Use Specific Value + Value = [value]
      • No: Ignore

    Warning: Parameters are case sensitive

Tip: Parameters appearing bold are important and should be added manually to GWT parameter settings if they haven't been identified.
