This is an attempt to make it easy to explain the Connections bubble in your Profile page, both when viewing your own profile, and more especially when viewing another person's profile

Viewing your own Profile:

When viewing your own profile you will have a connections section that looks like this:

ownprofile.jpg

This tells you that you are Following 95 people, and have 79 Followers, the intersect of those two numbers is the 42 connections - so 42 of the people I follow also follow me back, making them connections.

  • Remember this (it's very important!) in this context, a connection is someone you are following and is following you back - a bi-directional follow, if you will.

That was easy right?

Viewing other peoples Profile:

When you look at someone else Profile page, you will see something like this:

otherprofile.jpg

This tells me that this other person, is following 30 other people and has 46 followers, out of those this person has 7 connections that are also connections with you.

See the definition of a connection above.

This does NOT mean that this person only has 7 connections it merely means that you (the viewer) and this person have 7 mutual connections

If you happen to have a connection to this person, your connection does not count in the generation of the mutual connections number.

Easy right?

No?

Ok, what if we take 3 users and call them Member 1, Member 2 and Member 3

We define the relationship with arrows to define the direction of the relationship :

>>> = following

<<< = follower

<<< --- >>> = connection

We then look at each profile from each member's perspective and identify the number of Connections we would see reported in the Connections circle

Notice that the one way follows make no impact upon the Connections mutual or otherwise.

Also note that when Member 2 who is connected to both of the other members views each of the other members profiles, there is no mutual connection
