At breakfast today, my leader and I struck up conversation with a very humorous and engaging woman who worked in the healthcare industry.  While chatting, she mentioned that she was one of the speakers for today's HealthCare summit.  In fact, she was the first on the schedule.  Without even knowing it, she built our excitement for the opening session.

Arleen Chiu-Jones, Digital Product Manager, for Providence St. Joseph Health Group, shared with us just a snippet of what her company was able to do using Jive for internal collaboration.  In a nutshell, she was able to provide others in her company with a means to collaborate over great distances easily and more efficiently.  Specifically, this collaboration happened on their WellSpot portal.

In 2017, the WellSpot portal had over 5,800 active users.  Here are some more stats regarding the portal's use:

  • 1,500 daily users
  • 159 spaces
  • 753 groups

Arleen shared with us some details about the use of the WellSpot portal by just 4 of the 753 groups.  Those 4 groups were able to use Jive to increase collaboration and efficiency in various ways to the point that their approximate yearly savings come around to $229,500.

Yeah, that's a lot of savings, right?  That's just from those for groups.  There's a another 750 that likely are saving some money themselves.  Below are a few ways where those savings added up:

Meetings:   Providers from multiple states are able to work together and share information without having to travel.  Furthermore, less time is needed for those meetings because content can be reviewed ahead of time.  The groups mentioned saved anywhere from 50-75% meeting time.   Also, meetings could be more meaningful because time isn't wasted on mundane tasks, such as reviewing document changes.

Educational:  The Providence Health NICU Cohort team uses their group to save the amount of time used to facilitate ongoing education of their members.  They are able to present power-point slides, videos, and documents in advance and use the discussion/comment functions to facilitate what would equate to a classroom discussion.  It cut down on the hours of training time needed during the year, so that the NICU providers could spend more time in front of patients.

Consistency:  Using Jive spaces and groups allows for the St. Joseph Health people to have a single source of truth.  This means the message is consistent across the org and thus mistakes can be reduced.

Arleen's presentation was enlightening because it showed how just a small sub-population of users can make such an impact on the organization's bottom line just with more effective collaboration.  If you missed this, I hope you get a chance to watch the video when it is made available.
