Does Jive search documents or only titles and tags?

We are using 4.5.6.3.  I thought users had to use tags but now I've heard that Jive can search the document for searched words, even if the document wasn't tagged with that word.

We did some experimentation and came across what we think Jive is doing WRT

          search relevance:

             - The number of times the target word is in the body increases its

             search relevance.

             - The search biases text in the body of a document over title and tags.

             - The search biases tags over titles.

             - The Quick Search does a wildcard search while the advanced search does

             not.

             - The search does an AND between words.

             - The relevance of the document is increased if the target word count to

total word count ratio is higher.

                - For example, if you write a 20,000 word essay that makes a single

reference to the movie "Finding Nemo" somewhere in the document and you

have another document in the system (or a status update or a

          blog post or a

thread, etc..) that's only 50 words... and includes "Finding Nemo", the

thinking is that the latter is more relevant to a query for "nemo".

More info can be found by clicking "Search Tips" in the advanced search,

ie, when you click "View all results."

The word count and ratio in documents is really key here, and means that a document you see surfaced today in search results won't necessarily stay there. I know that seems obvious, but we've had people come to rely on certain documents to display in search results, but then perhaps post another document that has much less text (say a video or list of links), and it kicks that "important" document out of place.

Karl Rumelhart is a great person at Jive to get more information on search. A few high level thoughts to build on the comments here:

                • We ran our pilot in 4.5.6 and Jive does search titles, tags, and full text.
                • We had some configuration issues with the full document conversion indexing which Jive resolved.
                • There are options in 4.5 to have "stemming" or "non-stemming" searches which impact results.
                • We are preparing our 5.0 site for production and I have noticed the search results in 5 are better. "Better" meaning I am finding more specific results more quickly especially in the Spotlight Search.
