The director of the first Harry Potter movie was interviewed by NPR and said that Alan Rickman wasn't going to take the role because it was too one dimensional.


J.K. Rowling pulled Rickman aside and privately laid out that Snape actually was protecting Harry and had always loved Lily Potter; this was before Rowling had even come close to finishing the books.



Rowling told nobody else and Rickman took the part without telling anyone else involved with creating the movies.
