Using Jive as a "Cloud Community Platform"

I have a concept I want to throw out to the Community and hear your feedback, see if this is even possible.

Is it possible, and if so has anyone done it:

Break the Jive service apart and use the functionality of Jive as an accompanying service on content hosted other systems. Much like Facebook Connect which allows you to LIKE and COMMENT on content which is not physically stored in Facebook.

We want to break out of the conventional use of Jive as a "Portal" through which you communicate (community-style) and actually take the elements apart and attach them to other systems and content on other sites allowing the same functionality.

An example of what I'm talking about can be found here: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2011/08/kelly-thomas-beating-death-1.html#comments

LA Times uses Facebook Comments to allow Facebook users to comment on content through the LA Times site.

      Doable?
