Our Community links to our commerce platform, but in an unobtrusive, somewhat subtle manner. We run house ads at the bottom of most of our Community pages which link folks to our listing sign-up pages.
We debated doing this, particularly at our Community's inception. We didn't want to give the impression that our Community was just another sales/prospecting tool, especially as we strive to be the vacation rental Community for all owners, travelers and property managers, regardless of their company affiliations.
On the other hand, we wanted to address the needs of those people who came to our Community and wanted to learn more about listing with HomeAway, VRBO, and VacationRentals.com.
So far, the house ads appear to strike the right balance. We've seen some customer conversions, but as of yet, no one has complained about them negatively impacting the "Community experience."
