How important are direct messages and private messages for engagement inside internal community.

Our legal team recommends disabling direct messages and private messages inside our internal community because our current e-discovery system has limited ability to provide full context (all parts of the discussion thread).

I know there are third-party technologies that can capture and provide context for reporting, but they may be cost prohibitive at this time. Looking for feedback or justification to validate whether DM should be maintained and if it is worth the added cost of advance archiving and e-discovery services.

Anyone have answers/input for the following questions:

      • Have any other internal communities (social intranets) disabled direct messages?
      • If so, do you think it has had any impact on usability or adoption?
      • Is email a suitable alternative for direct messages?
