Possible to auto-rename spaces via API, etc.?

We have a need to rename a number of spaces due to branding changes. Is there a way to avoid doing this manually? Is there maybe an API function or other method that can do this without the painstaking manual method?

When I ran it to change the names of a few spaces, it made brand new ones instead.
