    Do polls help engagement?

Does anyone have any research or even first-hand knowledge that putting up polls to non-registered users entices registration or further engagement in any way? I haven't been able to find any research on it at all, and neither I nor my friends have ever felt a drive to register based on a poll.

I’ve found that people are not usually willing to register/log in to participate in a poll.  We’ve seen this a few times in our Community – the view counts on the polls are high, but then there might be 1 or 2 votes.

I don't have any experience here and am curious.  My gut tells me the users either need to get something out of it or be passionate about the topic to motivate a response   Maybe gamifying it would help like everyone who votes gets entered into a contest for a gift card or something like that.
