Re: What's the algorithm for the Popular Content widget?

In newer versions of Jive, this is all handled by the Jive Genius Recommender cloud service. For customers using this service (most of them) the Recommender algorithm is on a Jive cloud based service that can change continually without any need for customers to upgrade their sites. What is the Jive Genius Recommender Service? This doc has some detail on what it is doing.
If you disable the Recommender Service, your users will not be able to see the "Recommended for You" widget. They will still be able to see the "Trending People" and "Trending Content" widgets, but the results displayed there will be based on a basic popularity algorithm (stored locally) that measures activity over the last seven days based on views; comments; likes; bookmarks; and ratings. Trending People and Trending Content will not poll or update without a manual browser refresh.

Re: What's the algorithm for the Popular Content widget?
clairetaz Aug 10, 2015 5:37 AM (in response to seth.purkerson)The Widgets: Frequently Asked Questions states:
"So when you see a widget that shows the most popular items for a given space, project, social group or blog, you're getting the n items who have the highest combined score, which is a combination of comments, replies, edits and views, decayed over the last seven days".
My question is: does that also include the number of Likes?

Re: What's the algorithm for the Popular Content widget?
seth.purkerson Aug 10, 2015 8:14 AM (in response to clairetaz)No, at this time it does not include the number of likes. I just tested this myself to be certain, test completed on Jive 8.0.1.0.
In my test, I made a series of content items in an open social group which had the widget, the content items displayed as expected.
I then used the Recent Activity widget to "Like" missing content, all other content only had views from me initially creating it and then loading the published content.
By "Liking" through the Recent Activity widget I'm ensuring no additional "Popular criteria" such as views, comments, shares, etc. are influencing the widget. The result is that even though 'Popular Content 1' has three likes and one view while all other content in the group has only one view, 'Popular Content 1' does not show on the widget as it is the oldest of the five way tie because likes are not factored in.

Re: What's the algorithm for the Popular Content widget?
clairetaz Aug 10, 2015 8:22 AM (in response to seth.purkerson)That is quite strange really because one would think that if you like something, it is popular. Even more strange the other way round... that a piece of content can be top of the popular list with no-one liking it.

On the other hand, it could be popular because loads of people are reading it and yet because of the subject matter, no one likes it. I can appreciate that it could be important to separate sentiment from popularity.

Re: What's the algorithm for the Popular Content widget?
Dori Gray Apr 12, 2016 11:34 AM (in response to tmaurer)I'm confused by why every time I edit an old content item (usually to add a tag), it automatically appears in the Popular Content widget. There are times I go back and add tags to a lot of old content at once, and it clogs the widget on our homepage with all this old content that is not in any way "popular" other than me happening to edit it that day.

This is due to the PopularityDeterminationTask, Viewing and modifying content adds popularity however if this is posing a particular pain point for your community please open a support case and we'll investigate accordingly.

Re: What's the algorithm for the Popular Content widget?
delfin May 25, 2016 4:46 AM (in response to seth.purkerson)Hi everyone,
We are still in prem and in version 704. Currently we have Popular Content at our home page and one question we have is if there is a way for some contents to "expire" and be taken out of the popular content list so other next popular contents appear? Reason i'm asking is because we have a couple of popular contents that's been there for like ages now since it's always there and people's behaviour would usually click on it out of curiosity. I don't know if this is a valid point and if there's a fix for it. Thanks.

Re: What's the algorithm for the Popular Content widget?
delfin May 25, 2016 4:49 AM (in response to seth.purkerson)Also if I may add, the Popular Contents are the ones also seen in the Trending Contents if one would go to the Activity Stream. Based on our current jive version, is there a way for us to get the script of Trending Contents so if someone wants to find out more trending contents, we can just provide the link and it takes them to the Trending Contents link? Thanks.

Trending Content shows up on the Browse > Content page, so you can either teach people how to go there, or provide a link on your homepage or elsewhere to take them directly there.
