Is there a way to get the URI of the content/place that you are currently viewing?

I would like a user to be able to click on my app and say follow the piece of content that they are viewing without having to search for it with a request builder.

Every piece of content/place has a unique id that comprises part of this URI and it is this number that I need to form the URI.

Is there any way of retrieving this from a page? Or is there an api reference like "@me" that lets the api know I want the current view?
