I have the same question - thanks for posting.
The "Top Places" area in Jive is automatically generated in one of two ways, depending on whether or not you have the Jive Genius Recommender Service enabled.
If you are using the recommender service, then the top places will use the user's recent places to generate this list. The recommender service also can take into account a user's social actions.
The recommender service is enabled for all customers and was introduced in Jive 5. You can read more about it here: https://docs.jivesoftware.com/jive/7.0/community_admin/index.jsp?topic=/com.jivesoftware.help.sbs.online/admin/UnderstandingJiveGenius.html
If you are not using the recommender service, then the system will default to using the activity engine service to determine the top places for the user.
There are no configuration options available that can let an administrator control what places will display in this area of Jive. Because the recommender service takes in a variety of inputs, there can sometimes be recommendations and top places that seem out of the ordinary or hard to understand. Typically this is related to places that user a recently visited or viewed, but not interacted with.
