I know a bit about that feature and can help. You can configure a community to not allow one user to Share anything with, or Direct Message another user unless they have a mutual follow relationship. So User A would not be able to DM/Share to User B unless they BOTH were following each other. For an internal community, this isn't particularly useful; but it's key for spam prevention on External facing communities that choose to leave Direct Messaging on.
If this box were checked, it would override that connection requirement and allow anyone to DM/Share with anyone else across the community regardless of follow relationship. Let me know if you have any more questions. If I don't know offhand I'd be happy to ping the experts.
Do you know if there is a setting anywhere to allow a user/users to receive DMs/Shares?
This setting allows the permissioned users to message other users without a connection, but I have some users that would like to be able to receive messages regardless of connection status. The use case for this is that we want to have some users opt in to a new program and say "Message [user] to sign up."
