Is there a recent content or activity tile?

    akoplen

In the Activity + Pages place navigation, is there a recent content or activity tile? If not, has anyone used another tile that can work as a substitute?

      Thanks!

Libby Taylor, have you been asked this question before? Any feedback you could provide? I realize that there is the overall "Activity" page within this type of place navigation, but it would be so great to figure out some sort of solution for a "Recent Content" or "Recent Activity" tile as well.

          Thanks!

There isn't  a tile for that. Honestly, I think tiles have a long way to go before being comparable to just the basic widgets. Interesting how Jive isn't even using Activity pages in their own instance, as Libby pointed out. Tiles work great for the responsive design - we just need more options.

A discussion I had recently with Ryan Responsive Design and Column Widths

It also shows a create tile I hacked up (lifted from Activity). I evolved the page layout with help from Christy Schoon and we gave feedback on the lack of 'heartbeat' to the group when there is no tile that shows activity or recent content. In my case, this group is for a dedicated team of people new to Jive who I don't want going of to News and outside of their group to find out what's going on.

Tile parity, or near parity, needs an urgent reboot IMO. I thought this was announced as coming in '14 spring or summer by Marnie Pasciuto-Wood  but it presumably (?) got put on the back burner by News

Hi Alexis and Libby, We have done a few things with the Activity + Pages we have used in our internal community, which is on the cloud. I would say that most of our users don't use the Activity page so below is what we have populated our Page with to help them with finding the content. Our Activity + Pages are mostly Q&A in use, so we also use the Answered and Unanswered question tiles. Hope this information below helps or gives ideas!

                • Watch a Tag: This will pull in any content that we tag in all of the community. We made specific tags to show certain procedures and certain accomplishments. For example, for the win = 'FTW'.
                • Expandable Sections: We use this to group popular content for users to reference. Some of our communities are more question/answer so for the other content this works out. It is a little more work this way but it works for the time being.
                • Slideshow Carousel / Featured Content: We use the slideshow carousel or the featured content tiles to display specific information to users, like announcements or communications. The slideshow carousel is my preference because it can be dressed up with pictures. More appealing in my opinion.
                • HTML Tile: We use HTML tiles to direct people to a place to search (since there is no search tile, not like the search widget). We also use the HTML tile for creating ideas and other content, see below for examples. The 'look for answers' section of the HTML tile takes them directly to the content tab of the page. I have found that a lot of people don't see or use that tab (same as activity tab), so putting something like this out there might draw their attention to it. The content tab as you know can act like a search since you can filter.... just a workaround till more tiles come out.

                Two examples of HTML Tiles:

Thanks for sharing Stephanie Standring! I have been using a lot of the tiles you mentioned for very similar use cases. But, I am not too familiar with the HTML tile as I am not very well equipped with HTML coding (still learning ). Do you mind sharing the coding you used to add in those images (and I am assuming they are hyperlinked)?

                    Thank you!

If it helps here is my 'create bar'. Just create a rich text document, put this in the HTML, and use the Document Viewer tile. You will need to change the containerID and if you use graphics upload them to the place and . As I mentioned elsewhere, this is 'sparse' in order to work ok on a tablet.

Thanks John! I also just used the "Helpful Links" tile to make it look like the Actions menu.

OK - I was trying to keep it a bit like the Activity page, i.e at the top, and to have the ability to add it to any page. Before I switched to the 'eye' image I just had a link to Activity but I ran out of width on the tablet, however it had the advantage that you could hover the link and get a hover card of recent activity without even going to that page. Kudos to Christy for making me realize that I could do better than just using the Activity page with a long narrow strip of tiles down the right side. But I'm still hankering for something that shows users that the group is 'alive'.

But as many of us have alluded to, dare I say it?, IMO we are 'bodging' around missing OOB functionality.

Hey Alexis, here is the code we use for the images in my last post, it is simple but works. You may need to adjust or remove the style tags (padding, margin, width, and height). I needed them to get a certain look so feel free to leave them if they work out for you. I also use a target="_blank" so that what they are clicking on will open up in full window view. Sometimes not doing that will cause the target link to open up in the frame. I had this happen with the widgets so I just use if for everything now. Hope this helps.

I've done quite a bit of work using pages & tiles. I also put together a matrix re tiles vs widgets for my own reference, which may be of some assistance here: Widgets vs Tiles

Looks like we need an updated answer to this question. In the cloud version we have a "super list" tile that could easily represent the recent activity/content. You basically use the Super List tile and input the URL for the content feed that you are looking for (there's a thousand ways to slice and dice the content feed) and BAM you get the content feed you want whether it's  for the most recent blogs, all content, just discussions, whatever!

Libby - Thanks for posting this.  It was very helpful.  I was able to go to Browse > Content, select All on the left and then click the "Use this view in a tile" link at the bottom to plug the URL into a super list for a Recent Activity feed spanning the enite community in a tile.  There are a few features I noticed you lose with this approach instead of the Recent Activity widget.

                                        1. Profile updates and People updates don't seem to be displayed in this view.   (Greatly helps drive profile photo adoption.)
                                        2. You only get the title of threads instead of the title and a 1 liner of the original post plus a 1 liner of the latest response. (More context to draw a user into a discussion.)
                                        3. If you click "More Results" at the bottom of the tile it redirects you to the page you built the feed off of instead of just loading more results on the same page like widget foes via "Load more items". (Takes them off page you may want them to stay on.)

Are there any other tricks to make a tile that includes all the latest content plus these items?

                                          • Re: Is there a recent content or activity tile?

In 2017.1, we will be delivering a much more advanced super list tile that support multiple viewing options. One of the options gives you a more activity like view - with the author's avatar, a sneak peek at the content (more context), #of likes and comments shown. This will go a long ways towards being a more feature rich recent content view. As for the more results, if you listed a specific super list tile query, it should take you to those results including the place scope.

There is another discussion on this topic somewhere in JiveWorks, but I can't recall where. I think it was Jeremy Grant who responded there with a cogent explanation about how there is too much going on in the Recent Activity stream that is on the Activity page currently to put it into a tile without degrading performance. The gist of the discussion that I took away was that a more likely option Jive could provide would be greater layout customization of the Activity page and the option to make it the landing page even if there are other pages, too.

Jeremy Grant: have I got that right? Was it even you who said that, and if so, any chance you can point people to that discussion? Might have been comments on a document, actually...

You're correct, Ted Hopton - Found it! https://community.jivesoftware.com/community/customers/blog/2016/09/26/20163-release-sneak-peak-blog-post#comment-316171…

In 2017.1, we are building the ability to configure any tab in the navigation bar to be the landing page in a place. This will allow activity to be designated as the primary landing page. Furthermore, you will be able to hide/show any tab as you wish and able to rename pages you've created.

In order to migrate to tiles pages, we are also going to make it where you can have an overview page alongside activity and tiles pages. That way, you can setup your tiles pages while your users are still going to the overview page and once you're ready to switch over to activity and tiles pages only, you can disable the overview page and designate a new landing page.

Bravo on the "staging" capability for building tile pages! Everything else you've promised for 2017.1 sounds excellent, too.

You didn't mention more configuration options for the Activity page. Is that still on the table? It's essential to make the Activity page an attractive option as the primary landing page.

                                                    • Re: Is there a recent content or activity tile?

By different configuration options, do you mean different layouts? Currently, that is not on the table for 2017.1. It's some good feedback though and is in consideration for the overall roadmap. If you have specific layout configurations you feel would be best served, please send to me. Thanks!

Yes, Jeremy, I do mean layout primarily, and the top priority in my mind would be offering the 3-column layout with the activity stream in the center, responsive-width column. That's the most popular layout in our community. If the Activity page offered that, I'd be able to sell many more people on using it.

It would be ideal if the center column still gave you flexibility to have some tiles above the activity stream, too.

The other, much easier enhancement would be to allow the full array of tiles to be selected as options above the recent activity stream in the current 2-column format. It was great to gain the tile above it, but the restriction to only four types of tiles (banner, carousel, image gallery and video) is frustrating.

+1 to everything Ted said.  Spot on. All the tiles in the space above Activity would make a much easier transition.

Jeremy Grant - Thanks for responsiveness and transparency.  All these features sound great!.  I do have a couple follow-up questions:

                                                                1. With the new beefed up super list tile in 2017.1 will Profile and People updates show up like the normal activity feed?  It sounded like no, but I just wanted to confirm. Also, you mentioned clicking on the More Results option should take the user to the place scope, but I still feel like a load more results option without taking the user off the current page would be ideal. Is there anything planned for these? If not now, maybe later in a Recent Activity tile vs a super list tile?
                                                                2. That is awesome about being able to hide/show tabs.  Does this mean we will finally be able to hide the tabs for "Subspaces and Projects" and "People"?

Yes, super list tile displays the content/results returned in a specific way and is not currently taking into account the individual types of metadata being shown. We investigated showing content/results specific elements and for the sake of time and delivery, decided to implement as it is, for now. With that said, we are looking at showing results specific views - Polls would show poll options, ideas would show ideas stages, people would show the avatar in a simpler format, and on....

Ah, you are talking about a "show more" infinite scroll option. Yes, ultimately, that may be something we could look into. I've primarily heard that ask in responsive mobile view mode rather than in the webapp, normal view. In the webapp view, it could mess up the look and feel the place owner worked hard to create as results are expanded.

This is great!  The lure of multiple pages will certainly help us get old-school users who are comfortable with overview pages to begin experimenting with tiles.  It's hard right now to get them to consider switching when they have to give up something comfortable for something new and unfamiliar.
