In normal HTML land I'd show the animated graphic in a DIV, then replace the contents of the DIV with the result of an ajax call.
I think Jive loads that particular png image,
https://community.jivesoftware.com/images/steelhead/animating_loader.png, into a container and animates it with a script by quickly shifting the background position.
I wanted to use the same images, but didn't know where to look for the script. For the larger image, I went here...
For the smaller image, I did it the old fashioned way. I created a gif.

I wouldn't mind some discussion on the merits of doing this type of animation with a png and script vs. doing it with a gif.
