Same need for me in order to detect 'empty' places and ask their owner to possibly close them.
No, I never found a solution for this. I am having to look at each place content page to see how many of each content type there is. You could also do this with the API, but may take a bit of work to put together.

I was looking for this type of report as well. I found this thread about downloading the Places Activity CSV data, but that didn't really address the need either.
I solved this by using the REST API to retrieve all content, transforming the relevant fields into an CSV file (using our own Boomi integration/mapping platform), and then loading into Excel to create a Pivot table report by-place-by-contentType like this:
