Jive as social proxy to external content systems

There has been a discussion between our IT leads (cio, architects, pm...) about the possibility of tying in external content systems with Jive as the social proxy.

What this means is that content would be stored on the external systems (e.g. video, large file storage, ...) but the access (authentication/authorization) and

search (meta data on external data) would be maintained in Jive.

I am new to Jive, but it seems most external content is internalized before Jive imposes access controls and search upon it.

Has anyone done this and if so, are there specific examples available for use ?  and is there a framework for doing such systems ?

      Thanks in advance for advice/support.
