In Jive cloud you will have no access to the database, so it is no way to go. You can use the jive rest API to get all replies of a discussion or use the analytics API...

For a jiveInstance that old, the DB is your best bet. The API really didn't get a fair shake until at-least v4.5.
Going back as far as I can with our docs,
Which when it comes to Discussion Threads, there isn't a whole lot of change...given it was the prime content-type in Jive Forums.
If you have the jiveThread, simply select * from jiveMessage where threadid=xxx
If you want to stitch together the tree, then order by parentmessageid and creationdate ASC could probably give you an efficient data-set to iterate and reconstruct the thread tree.
Obviously, you'll need to add/subtract fields from the result set to meet your needs.
