Reviewing through your description, the event content type might not be enabled in your "public group" to confirm, as an admin user, you should have access to the manage >> settings page for the group, which will allow you to control the content types available.
However, if the event content type is enabled for the group, but you are still seeing an error when attempting to create one, I would recommend submitting a case in your customer group ( MyJive Secret Support Group Administration FAQ ) as a next step where a member of our support team can assist with additional investigations. When submitting the case, if you could also provide a link to the group and the username of the account you are seeing the error with this should help.
Thanks Jesse, the event function wasn't enabled for the group. Enabled it and now able to post Events.
