For our internal site of 1,200 users our Community Managers (CMs) have the following guidelines....
- Designing the space (layout, widgets, tag groups, etc.) and training (live or documentation) users of that space how it functions
- Coordinating subspaces (give admin and security rights)
- Monitoring content (is content tagged?, is confidential information shared too openly?)
- Interact with the CMs from other spaces to share best practices
Our CMs are all volunteers. Our spaces are divided by functional areas across our businesses (ie. HR, R&D, Purchasing, etc.)
We have one Community manger, me, and each community has a Community Owner. This sounds more like an Owner.

RJ - it would be great if you would close the loop by summarizing the results of your specific search. A number of good references were supplied - did you use them to synthesize an understanding of what the role needs to be in your circumstances?
